5.0 out of 5 stars My newest favorite author!
I seem to find one every day, but Proimos is my new favorite picture book author. His illustrations are crazily
cartoonish...his stories are full of silly details...but the secret messages are almost Buddhist...Here Sam has been loud all his life and his parents are proud; they never shush him. Then Sam visits his aunt in the city and she and everyone else shush him...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as pleased as the rest
I bought this book based on everyones reviews. I felt as though it encourged my child to be louder than ever. I dont think it gave the message to be who you are. If you want a book about being happy with who you are buy John Lithgrows book Marsupial Sue. It comes with a great cd that the kids love to sing along with. And it gets the message across better.

Then Sam visits his aunt in the city and she and everyone else shush him at everyturn. But on the last day of her visit, she gets it & says, "I don't seem to be able to keep the sadness or gladness inside of me." And Sam tells her it is foolish to try. Wonderful! A story for all ages to take to heart.

I loved this book. I think James Proimos is brilliant. His words and illustrations blend perfectly. This book is about being true to yourself. What better message is there to pass along to children? Plus, it's very funny! Bravo!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bought for an adult, December 20, 2005
This review is from: The Loudness of Sam (Hardcover)
I bought this book as a gift for my best friend. She was 20 years old and I thought this book suited her personality. She is very extroverted and really like the book. She cried when she read the book because she said it was her childhood in about 20 pages. I hope you enjoy this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!, July 1, 1999

This review is from: The Loudness of Sam (Hardcover)
I loved this book and it's message. Being a new parent I have so many things that I want to teach my child and this book covers one of them. I want my child to be proud of who he is and never change just to fit in and this book gets the message across in a fun way. The pictures are hillarious!

1.0 out of 5 stars There are lots better books out there, August 31, 2006
This review is from: The Loudness of Sam (Hardcover)
This book does not encourage kids to be who they are.... rather it encourages acting out. I believe there is a time and place for everything. This author believes that it's ok for kids to cry, or laugh 'loudly' in all environments and circumstances. A negative message in my mind.

By the way, one of the many marvels that Sam sees in the big city is "A dog with gas". Complete with a picture of a dog breaking wind.

If you want a book that encourages kids to be themselves pick up a copy of "Giraffes Cant Dance". This has a very positive message.
