LOUIE BELLSON - An American Legend

Described by Duke Ellington as “not only the world’s greatest drummer...(but also) the world’s greatest musician,” Louie Bellson had expressed himself on drums since age three. At 15, he pioneered the double bass drum set-up. At 17, he triumphed over 40,000 drummers to win the Gene Krupa drumming contest.

Product Description

LOUIE & CLARK EXPEDITION 2 is a big band collaboration of drummer Louie Bellson and trumpeter Clark Terry, each an American jazz master in his own right. These 2 legends perform, improvise, mentor and lead a 17-piece big band on an adventure reminiscent of its namesake, the historic Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1803. As composer, Bellson calls upon four capable arrangers including Tonight Show bandleader, Tommy Newsom. The opening four movements, The Chicago Suite, form the latest entry into a series of composer Bellson s salutes to American cities. Also of note is a delightful drum feature, Two Guys and a Gal, showcasing three drummers Bellson, Kenny Washington and Sylvia Cuenca. Liner notes written by historian and jazz advocate Nat Hentoff describe the music as a ...celebration of the human spirit that keeps regenerating itself. --Francine Bellson, album producer. (Visit the official Louie Bellson website: louiebellson.com)

Incredible. Who could have foreseen that drummer Louie Bellson and trumpeter Clark Terry, both of whom joined the celebrated Duke Ellington Orchestra in 1951, would be reunited for another high-powered big-band date in 2007. Even more amazing, what are the odds that Terry, who has turned eighty-seven, and Bellson, three years his junior, would still be playing like zealous teen-agers auditioning for their first gig. Implausible as it may seem, that's undeniably the case on the enterprising Louie & Clark Expedition 2, a thoroughly engaging session that is enhanced by Bellson's and Terry's inbred enthusiasm and consummate musicianship. Bellson not only kicks the band smartly, as he has a host of others including Ellington, Count Basie, Tommy Dorsey, Harry James and several of his own, he also wrote every number (one each with Remo Palmier and Jack Hayes) and arranged a pair including the frisky Two Guys And A Gal, on which he trades forceful drum rolls and rim shots with (relative) youngsters Kenny Washington and Sylvia Cuenca. Terry isn't heard until Track 5, Davenport Blues (following Bellson's four-part Chicago Suite ), but he immediately seizes the rudder and takes command, betraying no signs of rust or of age. In fact, Terry's half-dozen solos are uncluttered models of tastefulness and inspiration. Not bad for someone who plays more often than not these days while seated in a wheelchair. Bellson, of whom Ellington said, Not only is [he] the world's greatest drummer...he's the world's greatest musician, shows his impressive chops as a composer with a series of rhythmic and harmonic gems that are never less than exhilarating. Chicago, his third suite ( New York and Los Angeles came earlier), is superb, as are the other charts from Davenport Blues through Well All Right Then. There's not a clunker in the carton. We've not even mentioned the band, which is trim and admirable throughout. Soloists are first-class, notably baritone saxophonist Adam Schroeder and pianist Helen Sung ( Piacere ), Stantawn Kendrick (soprano on Lake Shore Drive, alto on Give Me The Good Time ), tenor Steve Guerra and trumpeter Stjepko Gut (who may be the same Steve Gut with whose Yugoslavian band Terry recorded some years ago). But Louie & Clark are the headliners here, and deservedly so, as they make sure this Expedition is not only successful but unforgettable as well. --Jack Bowers, All About Jazz, 3/5/08

The talented Mr. Bellson just keeps on swinging. Check out the track, "Give Me The Good Time" and you'll hear how the Lord blessed him with that - and also with great musicianship. In addition to being a great drummer, Louie is also a great person. So it's no wonder that he attracts the best players for his albums, like Clark Terry for this one.
I would recommend this music highly to anyone who wants to hear the best in big band drumming. Mr. Bellson is still Beyond Category.

I think this is an innovative and exciting collection of music. I would recommend this for anybody who loves big band music and is especially into listening to real musical and inventive drum solos. I hope there is still more to come from this fine musician and composer.

Both Louie Bellson and Clark Terry have passed since I bought this CD - RIP both. Lovely big, spacious recording of a very accomplished band under the guidance and magic touch of two of the all-time greats. They have both been there and done that, and both still loved playing music. What a lucky group of people to have recorded with these two greats! Quite wonderful.
