Book Description

September 15, 1998
The man with the golden trumpet, the quintessential jazzman, Louis Armstrong-Satchmo-was the father of so much that is jazz today. This book follows in his footsteps, from 1901, when he was born the grandson of a slave, to his death in 1971, and the beginning of his immortal fame. Evocative photography documents his early town-to-town travels, his celluloid years in Hollywood, his stints in Chicago, New York, and Paris, and his embrace of the Africa of his roots.

Year by year, here are his travels and awards, gigs and recordings, great times and protests. Comments by his admirers, among them Roy Eldridge and Diz, Earl Hines, Buck Clayton, Jean Renoir, Wynton Marsalis-and Satchmo himself- make this a spunky and reverent homage to one of the great creators of jazz.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

In the art and culture of the twentieth century, one American is preeminent: Louis Armstrong. His example transformed all music--as trumpeter Wynton Marsalis says in an interview for this book, "he made it more human and natural" --and he became the archetypal international pop star. This exceedingly handsome, all black-and-white photo album is a great big valentine to him. Its main text consists of a biochronology and 55 pages of comments about Armstrong by musicians, jazz critics, writers, entertainers, and the occasional head of state (these commentators betray the book's origins, for French names predominate). But the words are subordinate to the hundreds of pictures, including historical photos, publicity pictures, sheet music and advertising art, candid and formal portraits, and news photos of Armstrong's global travels. Go to Laurence Bergreen's Louis Armstrong (1997) for biography and to Gary Giddins' Satchmo (1988) for appreciation, but turn to Boujut's book to see the glory that was Louis. Ray Olson
