Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8-When Woodrow Wilson nominated Louis Brandeis to the Supreme Court in 1916, the Senate was reluctant to admit a "social reformer and highly political individual into the conservative world of government law." Anti-Semitism motivated some of the protest. When the nomination was confirmed, Brandeis became the first Jew and the first progressive justice to be appointed to the Court. This biography introduces key events in the life of this influential lawyer and judge, and provides an overview of his contributions, but does not provide enough depth to satisfy curious readers. For example, Brandeis is depicted as a leader in the Zionist movement, yet there is little information about what he actually did, or why he developed such an affinity for the cause. The organization is choppy and, at times, confusing, but overall, this is an adequate choice for reports when used in conjunction with other sources. Black-and-white photographs show the subject at various points in his life. David C. Gross's A Justice for All the People (Lodestar, 1987; o.p.) is more enjoyable to read as it moves in a smooth progression and creates a more vivid picture of the man's character.
