Book Description

Garden Museum Collection November 1, 2004
Alastair Duncan , the world-renowned authority on Louis C. Tiffany, has produced the definitive work on America's premier artist-designer, examining every facet of Tiffany's unrivalled achievements in a lifetime consecrated, in his own words, to 'The Quest of Beauty'. As Tiffany's wares have continued to rise in popularity since their resurgence in the 1950s, many collectors have focused on different aspects of Tiffany's work. Only Takeo Horiuchi, however, has built a comprehensive collection of masterworks in every artistic discipline to which Tiffany applied himself. This book, based on the superlative Louis C. Tiffany Garden Museum Collection formed by Mr. Horiuchi, presents a unique overview of every aspect of Tiffany's talent. For the first time it is possible to see the full range of Louis C. Tiffany's creativity from his famous lamps and windows to his lesser-known paintings and furniture. Every piece in the collection is reproduced in colour, often complemented by extracts from contemporary

5.0 out of 5 stars A real "fix" for the "Tiffanyhalic" - The Garden Museum Collection, January 6, 2006

This review is from: Louis C. Tiffany Garden Museum Collection (Hardcover)
So .......... you've seen all the books written about Louis C. Tiffany, and you've seen the pictures - over and over and over? NOT THIS TIME, my friend! This extraordinary work is destined to become as highly collected as any of Tiffany's works!

This is a huge book - 671 pages, filled with sumptuously photographed treasures, many shown for the first time. Printed on high quality stock, and presented in it's own slip case, this book feels absolutely "Imperial"!

Alastair Duncan guides us through the "mind boggling" collection assembled by Mr. Horiuchi, one of the greatest Tiffany collectors of the twentieth century. Louis C. Tiffany: Garden Museum Collection - presents virtually all of the known disciplines designed and manufactured by Louis Tiffany and his Tiffany Studios. Items include Tiffany's own paintings & photographs, plus a wealth of designs and watercolors from the design studios, windows, lamps, glass, pottery, metalwork, furniture, enamels, woodwork, silver, Liturgical items, and perhaps the most comprehensive selection of Tiffany's jewelry ever gathered in one place!

Additional chapters cover the effects of Tiffany on the Art Nouveau movement in Europe and America, and vice versa. Numerous European makers are discussed, with prime examples of their works - including complete rooms - represented.

If you own twenty books on Tiffany, or were to buy only one book to study and enjoy the extraordinary works of this great genius, this book is a must. Exhaustive in it's scope, timeless in it's beauty, this will be the benchmark for future writers.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Garden Museum..., February 22, 2009
By
This review is from: Louis C. Tiffany Garden Museum Collection (Hardcover)
This review isn't for the book, per se, but for the museum. Located in Matsue, Shimane-ken Japan, it's a truly remarkable and beautiful place. Not only does it feature examples of the classic Tiffany works with glass, but it has recreations of period rooms to showcase furniture designed by Tiffany; stained glass, jewelry, and all in a modern and lovely facility.

The museum's location is rather far off the beaten path for most Western travelers in Japan, but it's a stunning collection, and this book is as close as many people will get to visiting. I was lucky enough to live nearby and to visit it several times in different seasons -- if it's not possible to visit, and you love Art Nouveau, I recommend picking up this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heavy in Beauty and Information and Weight, May 26, 2009
This review is from: Louis C. Tiffany Garden Museum Collection (Hardcover)
This is yet another fine example of Tiffany world expert Alastair Duncan's lovely and educational books on many things Tiffany. From the gold tipped pages to the lovely photos from the Tiffany Studios factory, and of course color plates of lamps and all else, it is a major book for beginning to serious collector's enjoyment and education.

Well written as usual, with detail and fine descriptions, this is a book for the Tiffany lover. Apart from the good photos and information included in the 500+ pages, the book alone is worthy of the finest authentic quality Art Nouveau or Art Deco table top. If there were six stars available for this, I would give it six. It is truly a lovely and useful book. Well worth the price.
