Book Description

1568982267 978-1568982267 June 28, 2000 1
Louis Kahn is considered by many to be the greatest modern architect. His design for the Jewish Community Center on the outskirts of Trenton, New Jersey, which he began in 1954, epitomizes the essential forms for which Kahn is known. While simple in scale and program, this building shows Kahn's work at its most elemental. The Jewish Community Center is also important in its reflection of two larger social issues of the time. The suburbanization of America coincided with the JCC's move from downtown Trenton to a nearby suburban community. And the Jewish community was in transition after WWII. This is the next title in our Casa Malaparte series. Like the other titles in the series, this book offers an in-depth analysis of a single structure through original documents, drawings, and critical examination of the design process.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!, June 2, 2006

This review is from: Louis I. Kahn's Trenton Jewish Community Center: Building Studies 6 (Paperback)
This is a great book about one of Kahn's overlooked masterpieces! It's easy to read and incredibly well-researched. I think it's a shame that I haven't seen this book in more museum bookshops. While Solomon mainly focuses on the one work, the book addresses many important issues related to Kahn's career, his religion, and spirituality.
