About the Author

Dan Gill, an author, professor and broadcaster, earned his M.S. in horticulture and worked as an LSU Agriculture Center/Extension Service horticulturist for more than 20 years.  In 2001, Gill accepted a new state position in Baton Rouge as Associate Professor of Consumer Horticulture and currently writes a weekly column for the Times-Picayune and a monthly column for Louisiana Gardener magazine.  In addition, Gill appears weekly on WWL-TV, hosts the Saturday morning WSMB Garden Show, and serves as spokesperson for the LSU Agricultural Center's "Get It Growing" project.

Joe White served as area agent in horticulture production and marketing for the LSU Agricultural Center/Extension Service for almost 29 years.  With an M.S. in Horticulture and a Doctor of Philosophy in Horticulture, White previously wrote for Louisiana Gardener magazine, provided hundreds on horticultural broadcasts on KCBL and KNCB and has been a regular columnist for The Shreveport Times for 30 years.  White was also one of the founders of and occasionally appears on "Successful Gardening," a master gardener educational program on Times Warner cable. White is a charter member of the Louisiana Horticulture Society and he and Dan Gill were the recipients of a Professional Achievement Award in 2001 from the Louisiana Nursery and Landscape Association.

If you are looking for an complete and easy to use book this is the one to purchase. There are some color pictures (annuals, groundcovers, ornamental grasses, perennials, shrubs, trees, wildflowers, etc.) but what makes the book so good is the layout - when, where and how to plant, care & maintenance, additional information and additional species.

Anyone wishing to garden in Louisiana's unique environment should consult this guide. Organized by plant type, it is easy use for species identification, planting instructions, and care tips.
Refer to this guide before purchasing plants and again when doing garden maintenance.

Although the book is dedicated to first time gardeners in Louisiana, there is a wealth of information for the old timers as well. The book contains the how when and what to plant along with both common and scientific names of plants that will do well in the area.

The book is cram full of easy to follow sound advise for gardeners.

A great "welcome gift" for anyone moving into Louisiana.
