Biography

Raful Neal was one of the key architects of the Baton Rouge blues and R&B sound, with a career that spanned six decades. With his relaxed vocal style and piercing, behind-the-beat harmonica, he won a devoted following on the South Louisiana scene and became an icon on the international blues scene.

Editorial Reviews

From Grove Press Guide to Blues on CD

Baton Rouge's Raful Neal is a decent vocalist and a talented, terse harp player whose debut album, in 1987, relies too heavily on full-bodied Bob Greenlee production and Alligator's remastering to get him over. Neal's son Kenny contributes lead guitar to material that careens from swamp and Chicago blues to faux Muscle Shoals soul. A Louisianian club recording would capture the "legend" more honestly. -- © Frank John Hadley 1993

4.0 out of 5 stars Raful Neal is the Real Thing, December 3, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Louisiana Legend (Audio CD)
The professional reviewers don't seem too impressed with Raful's "Louisiana Legend" recording. But I've listened to a lot of blues and feel this is one of the best examples of raw, genuine and authentic blues stylings. Neal's voice draws some criticism. I like it for its unpolished style. There's emotion in it. He's very convincing. The songs are compelling. And his harp is exquisite and unusual. This guy sounds like no one else.
