Book Description

From NY Times and USA Today bestselling author, Jana DeLeon, the first book in the Miss Fortune mystery series.

It was a hell of a longshot…

CIA assassin Fortune Redding is about to undertake her most difficult mission ever – in Sinful, Louisiana.

With a leak at the CIA and a price on her head by one of the world’s largest arms dealers, Fortune has to go off grid, but she never expected to be this far out of her element. Posing as a former beauty queen turned librarian in a small, bayou town seems worse than death to Fortune, but she’s determined to fly below the radar until her boss finds the leak and puts the arms dealer out of play.

Unfortunately, she hasn’t even unpacked a suitcase before her newly-inherited dog digs up a human bone in her backyard. Thrust into the middle of a bayou murder mystery, Fortune teams up with a couple of seemingly-sweet old ladies whose looks completely belie their hold on the town. To top things off, the handsome local deputy is asking her too many questions. If she’s not careful, this investigation may blow her cover and get her killed.

Armed with her considerable skills and a group of old ladies referred to by locals as The Geritol Mafia, Fortune has no choice but to solve the murder…before it’s too late.

About the Author

Jana DeLeon grew up among the bayous and small towns of southwest Louisiana. She's never actually found a dead body or seen a ghost, but she's still hoping. Jana started writing in 2001 after attending a funeral, but that's a whole other story. She focuses on murderous plots set deep in the Louisiana bayous and the secrets that lie just beneath the surface of small towns. By day, she writes very boring technical manuals for a software company in Dallas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast-Paced Mystery with a Lot of Laughs June 28, 2012
By Leigh
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
If you like a big dose of humor in your mystery books, you will enjoy "Louisiana Longshot." The main character, Fortune Redding, is hiding out in Sinful, Louisiana. Fortune assumes the small bayou town will be boring and drama-free, but she quickly finds out that the town and its residents are not what they seem. I really enjoyed the characters, especially Ida Belle and Gertie, two of Sinful's meddlesome older residents. For those who like to solve the mystery before the end of the book, you might be surprised at what happens. I was feeling pretty smug until I realized I was totally wrong about the book's conclusion. This is a fun read that is perfect for fans of humorous mysteries or those who enjoy novels set in the South. I can't wait to read the second book in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Twisted Humor and a Killer Mystery June 28, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
There are very few authors who can make me laugh out loud, but Jana DeLeon is one of them. In Louisiana Longshot, she hits just the right combination of twisted mystery and hilarious characters. Fortune Redding, the CIA agent who is hiding out in tiny Sinful, Louisiana, is a great combination of uptight overachiever and zany eccentric, while her sidekicks, the senior citizen posse made up of Ida Belle and Gertie, are just ridiculously funny. I found myself snorting and laughing out loud many times throughout the whole book.

Like with many of DeLeon's books, I found this one to be too short. Not because the story needed more to be told, but just because I wanted to spend more time with the characters. It's a fun read that's hard to put down, and I'm looking forward to the next situation these three get themselves into.

5.0 out of 5 stars LAUGH OUT LOUD FUNNY - AND STILL BELIEVABLE! July 23, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this book because Amazon was advertising it alongside my own mystery (The Blue Diamond: Jeweler's Granddaughter Mystery #1). What a wonderful book! Louisiana Longshot is one of those rare mysteries that doesn't resort to slapstick or too-stupid-to-live bimbos to create laugh-out-loud moments. All of the characters - from C.I.A. assassin Fortune Redding to the hunky deputy sheriff to Fortune's senior citizen sidekicks - are strong and totally believable. Jana DeLeon backs up her characters' behavior with realistic psychological motives. The plot twists and turns and just when you think you've figured out who-dun-it, new clues lead you off in a new direction. This is the first book I've read by this author and I can't wait for the next book in the series. Right now, however, I'm off to buy her other books . . .

Once I started to read, couldn't put down . Laughed so hard my husband came from the other room to see what I was laughing about. Just downloaded the next series and hope I can get some sleep tonight and not stay up all night reading. Keep up the great work. Love your work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love "Miss Fortune" June 1, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Being a huge fan of Ms DeLeon's I decided to try this new series. I am ecstatic that I did. I was laughing out loud in several places, and as I am very close to the ages of two of the book's heroines, really enjoyed and appreciated this presentation of senior women! The story is well written, with only a few minor editing mistakes that don't distract from the reading enjoyment. My only wish is for a bit more of a romance, as I am quite used to that in most of her books. That being said, she has definitely left that option wide open as the series develops, and I for one am looking forward with great hope and expectation to the conflagration of emotion that could potentially finally erupt between the sheriff and Miss Fortune! I am anxiously awaiting the next book in this delightful series.

More About the Author

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Jana DeLeon was raised in southwest Louisiana among the bayous and gators. Her hometown is Carlyss, but you probably won't find it on a map. Her family owned a camp located on a bayou just off the Gulf of Mexico that you could only get there by boat. The most important feature was the rope hammock hanging in the shade on a huge deck that stretched out over the water where Jana spent many hours reading books.

Jana and her brother spent thousands of hours combing the bayous in a flat-bottom aluminum boat, studying the natural habitat of many birds, nutria and alligators. She would like you to know that no animals were injured during these "studies," but they kept makers of peroxide in business.

Jana has never stumbled across a mystery or a ghost like her heroines, but she's still hopeful.

She now resides in Dallas, Texas, with the most spoiled Sheltie in the world.
