Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 5-8. In this compilation of comic strips that originally appeared in the newspaper, veteran political cartoonist Chase retells the story of the Louisiana Purchase, with attitude. His charming black-and-white line drawings, in a style somewhere between that of Robert Crumb and Rudolph Dirks (creator of the "Katzenjammer Kids"), give memorable face to historical figures that many children will know only by name. Napoleon is a whiny crybaby here, and Tallyrand is a bitter double-crosser. The action, both intense and humorous, is often as exciting as what goes on in any classic comics serial; kids will be wondering what happens next instead of when the lesson will be over. The accessible, entertaining slice of a young America's history is sure to please both comics enthusiasts and reluctant history students--adults as well as children. Carlos Orellana

About the Author

New Orleans born and educated, John Churchill Chase studied at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts before returning to his city of birth, it being better suited for "living purposes." He lived on Music Street, not named, he used to say, because his children used to take lessons and practice on the piano every day. During his life, Chase was the number one authority on the streets' histories, in fact, on much of New Orleans history. He was frequently contacted by the city before a street name was changed, though many were changed anyway.
