5.0 out of 5 stars Willy's Bassist discusses life with Mink DeVille
Great Record! Had a blast helping Willy with these tracks. My favorites are 1.White Trash girl (that's a story you must hear), 2.When You're away from me. 3. No Such Pain as love, 4. Loup Garou (from the center of Willy's gut.) Working with Willy on the road is a bit like living in a twilight zone episode. An amazing dark adventure with a few twists and turns you could...

I'm still trying to find a cd with that voice from The Princess Bride soundtrack. Did he sing that wonderfully just on one song?

Great Record! Had a blast helping Willy with these tracks. My favorites are 1.White Trash girl (that's a story you must hear), 2.When You're away from me. 3. No Such Pain as love, 4. Loup Garou (from the center of Willy's gut.) Working with Willy on the road is a bit like living in a twilight zone episode. An amazing dark adventure with a few twists and turns you could never expect. He jumped off the stage at a concert in Nuremburg Germany one night to go after a guy who (he thought) was throwing stuff at the band. Turned out the guy was trying to give Willy a throat lozenge. Willy was just trying to protect the rest of the band from getting hit by something. I told Willy, "If you ever do that again I'm bringing the whole band down with you and we'll really have a go at it"...) He hasn't jumped off the stage since. Willy DeVille is the best. Loup Garou is a great record. Check it out. peace, DK - Mink DeVille Band

What do you say about the songs of Willy DeVille? His songs just eat there way into your subconscious, very much in the same manner as Tom Waits or Nick Cave. Each song on Loup Garou is your favorite while it is playing and after a few listens all you want to do is hit repeat. Simply amazing. Not a bad track on the album and his voice just mesmerizes you on every song. And just when you are marveling at his voice, a little mariachi instrumental touch will kick in and you will realize how brilliant the instrumental portions of the album are...

4.0 out of 5 stars DeVille Dark, April 5, 2009
This review is from: Loup Garou (Audio CD)
This must be the darkest work from Willy. Missing is the brilliance of "Lily's daddy's cadilac" or the humor of "Italian Shoes". However, I have wondered if the celtic Borsey would surface (yes) and how he would integrate with the beloved castanets and brass work. Here it is, and beautifully done, although lyrics portray some desperate heartache/pain relief gone over the top. We are so relieved to hear him working and, dare I say, cheerful(?)of late.

Having been a fan of Mink / Willy Deville since 1977 when I heard his first single on FM radio("Mixed Up, Shook Up Girl"), I feel "Loup Garou" is pretty close to his best studio release. Loup Garou loosely translated means "werewolf of the swamp" and that's exactly the feel you get when listening to this CD. I saw Willy Deville perform in concert on 5 different occaisions and he is truly a blues legend who lived his work. As for this CD release, the best tracks are "The Ballad Of The Hoodlum Priest", "Heart Of A Fool", "White Trash Girl", "You'll Never Know" (a duet with Brenda Lee!), "Runnin' Through The Jungle", and "When You're Away From Me". If you can find a video called "From The Bottom Line To The Olympia - Willy Deville LIVE!" you can see this great artist in concert. But this CD is really worth getting if you're thinking of buying it. RIP Willy Deville. We will really miss you and your music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb!! Willy Deville - Loup Garou Outstanding!!, September 11, 2009

This particular album just further solidifies how incredibly gifted Willy is as a singer, writer, and story teller. There are very few people that can interpret a song, through words, feeling, and mood like he so exquisitely does. The 'Loup Garou' song captures the New Orleans culture and brings to life the mysteriousness of the area. His voice is so rich and beautiful. He takes you to the most deep and sincere feelings with 'Angels Don't Lie', 'My One Desire' (in an interview he says this one reminds him most of his beloved late-wife Lisa), and the phenomenal duet with Brenda Lee, 'You'll Never Know'. He adds wonderfull up tempo songs 'Still (I Love You Still)' and it's spanish counterpart 'Asi Te Amo' among a few others, and the doowap of Runnin' Through the Jungle'.

Willy is so masterful. This album is incredible through and through - a true work of art. He once again shares his gift of music with this effort. This is one album that will stay with you long after the 'one hit wonders' fade - he just keeps getting better and better!

Loup Garou being DeVille's 1995 release is a splendid record with great tracks such as "No Such Pain as Love", "Angels Don't Lie" and "You'll Never Know". The booklet to this release is truly a work of art and has many fine photographs and lyrics that are easy to read. We also get a list of whom plays what on this record. 4/5.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great CD but somewhat different singing from Willy., January 22, 2009
This review is from: Loup Garou (Audio CD)
The songs here are especially strong. Especially the majestic "Angels Don't Lie" and the intelligent cover of the Chambers Bros.' "Time Has Come Today". However, the singing style is a little different from the Mark Knopfler/Princess Bride era-Willy beloved by a reviewer above. It really threw me at first. In fact the opening track here, "No Such Pain as Love" doesn't even sound like Willy. It sounds like some garden-variety alt-country singer. (Not my favorite genre. Yuk!) Fortunately the old Willy voice starts to come back in track no. 2 and is fully back by the aforementioned "Angels" (which should remind folks of the Mark Knoplfer-era because of the presence of uilleann pipes).
