Gilberto Gil's first album - lovely bossa nova!,
By DJ Joe Sixpack (...in Middle America) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)
This review is from: Louvacao (Audio CD)
From 1967, this is perhaps Gil's most conventional, most bossa nova flavored, album, and also one of his dreamiest and best. Although many of these early songs were also recorded by reigning pop stars of the time (such as Elis Regina), Gil's versions are superior, and many of the songs on this album wind up on his various best-ofs. Gil's gentle voice and deft acoustic guitar work mesh well with the studio back-up -- strings, flute and percussion -- and his presence is so strongly felt that it's clear this is an artist who will rise above the musical conventions of his time. Although the liner notes aren't clear, I suspect that the accordeon on "Viramundo" is by the forro great, Dominguinhos... this one's a real winner.

Pure joy,
This review is from: Louvação (Audio CD)
Please do not be fooled by the three stars in the current average rating for this album - this is down purely to some kind of clerical error that has left one reviewer here unhappy enough to award only one star (because it was not what he had actually ordered), thus giving the impression it's for Louvação - it's not.
This first album from Gil, which includes the definitive and original version of the classic, Roda, is a pure joy from beginning to end. Every song here has something special- in fact there is not one dud track. Gilberto Gil has always had an excellent voice and irresistibly rhythmical delivery, here it is almost angelic. If you like quality 60's acoustic bossa nova with some well judged strings and brass backing here and there, you cannot afford to miss this one. Buy it, listen to it and review it so we can all make sure the average for this classic album is nudged up to its deserved five star status. |
