Lovable and Sweet,
By Robert Copps (Vancouver, B.C. Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lovable & Sweet: 25 Vintage Hits (Audio CD)
This is the compilation to buy, because it has the main song. Annette Hanshaw was just a teenager when she recorded "Lovable and Sweet". Unbelievable. What a voice. And what a song! Written by Oscar Levant, it's lyrics and melody work wonderfully together. It has delightful complex internal rhymes that are a joy to rediscover after the simplicity of the last few decades' pop songs. Almost anyone listening to Annette sing this song for the first time is going to -- I don't know how to put it. Can you fall in love with a young girl that died 16 years ago at 75?

What a wonderful album! I couldn't stop listening to the samples before I got it. Starved for good music, I am just discovering some neat music from the early 1900's. Annette Hanshaw has so much class, and makes most of today's pop singers sound like a fart.

The best jazz singer of the 1920's...,

She could swing before the word "swing" was even invented, and she could scat before the phrase "scat" was ever invented. She improvised and swung with feeling and she always had the best back up musicians(Dorsey Brothers, The Mephis Five, Joe Venuti, Manny Klein, exe...) Hanshaw retired in 1934, after all she was an heiress who was singing for fun, not for money. This is esseential jazz, that sounds timelass and as good today as ever(does not at all sound dated) Pure jazz!!!

This CD from the fine works of Annette Hanshaw is a real piece of Americana! The soothing voice of this 30's star comes across crisp and clear. Most folks my age (51) don't have a clue who even Annette was and thats fine because most my age don't have a clue about what real music is either. It's no wonder that Annette was known as a Band Leader's Dream the way that she could blend right in with the music. The days of singers like Annette Hanshaw,Connee Boswell,Jo Stafford and Helen Forest are gone forever. The Pop Music of today has nothing to offer and I mean nothing! The only way to hear good music today is to go back into the arcives of time and hold on to what will never again be duplicated! Treat yourself to some of the finest singing ever recorded-Annette Hanshaw!
"Enjoy" Joe Kopeck

Annette Hanshaw Is a Gem!!!,

I find Annette Hanshaw's singing incredible. Did she have a great voice? It doesn't matter to me because she is so easy to listen to and one CD wasn't enough for me. While this is a superb collection and I love ASV/Living Era's array of splendid music from the 20s and 30s, I still needed more of Annette's recordings. What a pity that she stopped recording in 1934. Her 78s have been found and put on CDs and they sound fantastic because of the feeling she puts into her singing. This is an especially good one to be introduced to her music since it has a bit of all her recordings from 1926-1934. I easily give it five stars. I prefer her over Ruth Etting and that says a lot!!!

Annette Hanshaw was one of the first female singers (late 1920's) who grasped how the new jazz-tinged songs of tin pan alley should be sung. In her teens when her career began (she retired from singing in her twenties), she grew up with the new sound and rhythm of the post WWI era. She could swing with the jazz beat/tempo and skip along with the rhythm as if she had been born to do so. Her voice recorded well and she sang in a natural style, not the in the style of the operatically aspiring or straining style of so many vocalists in the 1910's and twenties. The result is that many of these recordings sound modern - eighty years after they were recorded. There was a playful, carefree, but technically perfect way about her singing. A good album to add to your collection. Enjoyable.

It was shocking to hear how perfect the vocalization of Lovable and Sweet is. The sound quality is incredible. The musicality is stellar. Simply astounding.

I picked up this cd on a lark and was stunned at how wonderful it was. My favorite tracks are "Ain't He Sweet" and "You Wouldn't Fool Me, Would Ya?", but to tell you the truth there are so many wonderful songs. One of the few cd's I can listen to from start to finish.
This is my favorite cd to listen to while I'm driving - it is fun to sing along with and the light mood keeps me smiling during the entire trip.

THE ARCHETYPAL TWENTIES SOUBRETTE,

Annette Hanshaw was a singer whose voice encapsulates the Jazz Age, not least due to its bell-like quality. That ensured that she comes across clearly despite the age and, in some cases, the inferior quality of the original recording process. She was also a very relaxed singer, who never sounded as though she was straining for a note. Add to that the quality of her accompaniments, which included some of New York's best studio musicians, and the result is sheer delight. This compilation spans the period of her recording career, from 1926 (aged 15) until her premature retirement in 1936, and is enhanced by discographical details and Peter Dempsey's liner notes.

This is a brilliant album - there are songs from her first
recordings ("Black Bottom", "Six Feet of Papa") to her later recordings ("Let's Fall in Love"). Even though she isn't that well known, she had a much better voice than many of her contemporaries. "Pagan Love Song" is a beautiful - complete with hawaiian guitars. "You Wouldn't Fool Me, Would You" is sung ala Helen Kane. There is almost 80 minutes of sheer bliss. |
