4.0 out of 5 stars Imaginative period romance that keeps you guessing
This was a very good romance novel. Much better than I expected -- full of surprising twists and turns, with wonderfully drawn characters and settings. Unlike the typical romance novel, there is a lot of imagination put into this story. I only wish I could see more from this novelist.

A journey to the past to heal the wounds of the present...

It was a portrait of a man in Civil War dress...a broodingly handsome man whose cold eyes seemed to look straight into young Lindsey Callahan's soul. He was Devlin Windsor and his violent, bitter life left a legacy of tragedy that has haunted the Windsor family to the present day.

Now Lindsey's dear friend Jonathan has fallen victim to the family curse. Heartbroken, she makes a desperate wish: to go back in time and confront the man who long ago brought so much pain to the Windsor clan. Will she find the cold-blooded killer of legend? Or a once-in-a-lifetime soulmate she will always love across time?

And my review:

I love time-travel romance, so I buy pretty much anything that looks like it's from that genre. Unfortunately, that means I end of buying some "stinker" books along with the good ones.

This book was really hard to read. The author's writing style was very choppy and abrupt. I found myself having to go back and reread sections to try and make sense of what was going on. There would be huge sections of just dialogue without any prose to break it up. When that happens, it can be really hard to try and keep track of who's talking.

And this story seemed to be all plot and no character development. I never really got a handle on who the characters really were as people. The only impression I got of the heroine is that she's rather immature. Really, the way she was running away from her father and hiding in attic rooms came across as the behavior of a child, not a fully grown woman. And to be obsessed with a person who's been dead for 150 years? Weird. I guess it was supposed to come across as mystical, but instead, it just felt a little silly and out of place.

I'm afraid that I can't recommend LOVE ACROSS TIME. For a good time-travel romance, try Susan Plunkett's REMEMBER LOVE or Sherry Lewis' A TIME TO DREAM.
