Chloe is a Keeper,
By V. Seaton "romance4me" (Southeast) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Love Affair of an English Lord: A Novel (Mass Market Paperback)
Usually, I favor the hero more than the heroine in romance novels. However, this time, I must admit Chloe Boscastle is a keeper. She's so witty, determined, and assertive that you have to love her.
After running into Dominic one night in the rain, Chloe is unable to forget him. So, when he is murdered she morns him. But then later comes home to find him quite alive, but injured and hiding in her closet amidst the lingerie. From there, the reader is taken on a suspenseful, but utterly charming and humorous story as we see Dominic try to discover the truth behind his murder plot. A connection between Dominic and Chloe is formed as she tries to help him, and he tries to protect her from his prime suspect. In the meantime, they are unable to resist one another and so the story goes... Full of enjoyable supporting characters and stories, The Love Affair of an English Lord will make you laugh. Jillian Hunter's characters are so distinct and developed that you feel a connection even to the minor players. Her balance of narrative and dialogue is great, and the story is not your typical regency romance. This Love Affair is a delight.

A Meeting in the Lingerie?,

This review is from: The Love Affair of an English Lord: A Novel (Mass Market Paperback)
Jillian Hunter has created a strong, unique family with the Boscastles, who easily compare to Nora Roberts MacGregors. The reader never knows what to expect from these individuals. Entertaining does not even begin to describe them.
Chloe Bostcastle, the rambunctious younger sister of the Boscastle clan, is determined to enjoy life no matter what the outcome. She's banished to Chistlebury to stay with relatives after she's caught kissing a man in public. Chistlebury is a sedate country town where Chloe's family is sure that she can't get into trouble. But if there is to be trouble, it is sure to find Chloe. Dominic Breckland, finds himself in Chloe's lingerie. Not a bad place for a dead man. Seems he was stabbed and presumed dead, staged his funeral, and is now intent on finding the man responsible for his death, as well as that of his brother and Chloe's brother. Hiding in Chloe's closet to escape being hunted, he must trust her to help him. And so begins the journey into murder, mayhem, and romance. Character development is excellent, as is Jillian Hunter's norm. Hunter puts two strong characters together and the reader enjoys the sparks flying. Chloe is strong willed, gorgeous, and not about to be bullied into forming to expectations. Dominic is also strong willed, ruggedly handsome, and used to people jumping at his command. Both are quick tongued and intelligent, which gives the reader many pages of witty banter between the two. The villain is not unknown, but how Dominic exposes him is a mystery. The final duel was a bit of a letdown and the outcome expected. Even though we all knew it was coming, it was still very entertaining and a worthwhile reading adventure. I think the best part of Hunter's books is the repartee between characters. THE LOVE AFFAIR OF AN ENGLISH LORD is a wonderful book and makes the reader anxious for the conclusion to this trilogy, THE WEDDING NIGHT OF AN ENGLISH ROGUE. My biggest complaint is that Hunter has created the Boscastle family with so many diverse characters, it's a shame more books couldn't be written to give each of them time for their own story to be told.

An Average Romantic Tale,

This review is from: The Love Affair of an English Lord: A Novel (Mass Market Paperback)
This is a fairly quick read, with a predictable story. I read the entire book in a day, but wished my next order from Amazon had already arrived. The main characters, Chloe and Dominic, simply don't have much to distinguish them from hundreds of other love-struck regency Brits constrained by social mores and convention. Aside from the main story of their mutual seduction, there is the sub-plot of how Dominic will prove that his uncle is a killer and traitor to the Crown. ...Yawn...

Chloe Boscastle has been banished to the family's country estate after being cought kissing a young man in public. Having no living parents, Chloe's brothers have taken on the roll as protector and she doesn't like it one bit. Chloe soon finds out that life at Chistlebury might be a bigger adventure than the London Season. One night she discovers (the presumed dead) Dominic Breckland hiding in her lingerie. They soon discover that their families are linked through a villian who has scarred them both in the past. Chloe and Dominic join forces to bring the villian's deeds to the attention of the public- and fall in love in the process.
Jillian Hunter's character development is great in this book and I loved it even more than "The Seduction of an English Scoundrel." I don't believe this book had any slow points and had some good mystery without sacraficing romance. Chloe is strong without being unbelievable for the time period. The book also has some depth to it as well. I cannot wait for the final installment of the series!

This was, IMO, not the best of the Boscastle series. I liked the characters, and the plot was okay. But it was...well, boring. It was written in such a way that made me skip pages and pages - and I never skip pages of Jillian Hunter books.

A Fun and Lite Read,

This review is from: The Love Affair of an English Lord (Boscastle) (Mass Market Paperback)
Kissing a young man in public was the last straw for the Boscastle clan. Chloe's wild and spirit behavior had often got her into trouble, but this latest incident was just too scandalous for her family to allow her stay in London. So, her brothers, who often had to deal with their own scandalous affairs, sent her to the country to stay with relatives. They hoped, she would reform her ways and restore her reputation. Yeah right! She was a Boscastle. They should have know better. Trouble ALWAYS found a Boscastle.
After being betrayed, his brother and friend murdered, and someone attempting to kill him, Dominic Breckland a.k.a. Lord Stratfield was determined to find the man responsible and bring him to justice. So, waking up in Chloe's lingerie wasn't something he planned. Not to mention, getting caught by Chloe while covered in her unmentionables. But, considering he had a stab wound and was presumed dead, he had no choice but to trust her...even though his mind would linger to more intimate thoughts. There was no doubt the attraction was mutual. The sparks flew every time they opened their mouths. The back and forth banter was most entertaining. Chloe wasn't like the other woman Dominic had ever dealt with in the past. She sought out adventures and found joy in the life around her. I loved this quality about her and obviously so did Dominic. She was also quick witted and intelligent, and fearless, she didn't cower to anyone. Which fascinated and frustrated the handsome and charming Dominic, a man who was used to being obeyed. I loved how each of them struggled between duty and desire. Poor Dominic. He didn't stand a chance. He felt guilty seducing his friend's younger sister, but he couldn't seem to help himself, and Chloe didn't help matters any, the little temptress. I love how the author gives the supporting characters life and personalities. Chloe's uncle was a strick man, but a fair man with a heart of gold. I loved her Aunt Gwendolyn's character, a most memorable one to be sure. I couldn't help but giggle at her adamant belief in the Legend of Lord Stratfield's Ghost, a spirit that lurked in young women beds and seduced them. But, the funniest part, she believed the ghost's true intention was to ravage her. I couldn't help it, it just cracked me up. I wish I had a kooky and carefree Aunt Gwendolyn, I don't think life would ever be dull. That all being said, I do wish there had been more intrigue and suspense before the final villain confrontation. Overall, I have said it once, I will say it again. Jillian Hunter makes reading fun. This book was a fast paced read with a simplistic, but entertaining plot. The characters were fun, engaging, and memorable. The connection between the characters, both protagonist and secondary was inspiring, credible, and enjoyable. The chemistry between Chloe and Dominic however was sensual, sizzling and down right scandalous. The Love Affair of an English Lord is the second book in the Boscatle series. If you haven't read this series, you really should. In my opinion, The Boscastle series is a staple among historical romances. Every avid reader should have them on their bookshelves.

This was one of my favorites in the Bocastle series. Hot and steamy from from the very beginning! The characters were tangible and the sexual tension was phenomenal. I usually don't read books over again but I definitely made an execption for this one. Basically Chloe gets banished to the country side, a nobleman escapes his death, a devious plot is uncovered and everyone lives if not happily ever after than something close to it.
