Love Again, July 2, 2000
This review is from: Love Again (Audio CD)
People who hear John Haley-Walker for the first time usually become fans; and his fans have been waiting literally for years to get their hands on his first CD. When they found out he was recording one at long last, they had to wait another almost-2 years while he painstakingly created a ...well... masterpiece, Love Again. Well worth waiting for, Love Again refreshingly encompasses several genres and, like Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer's stuff, is NOT the stereotypical singer/songwriter approach to writing. John's songs are personal but not cloying; they cover the gamut from touching to chilling ...it's like watching 11 movies; and the production choices are excellent. Why isn't he famous? None of us can figure it out, except that, while not entirely adverse to the idea, he doesn't exactly pursue fame. John writes original & unique tunes that quickly & easily draw the listener in; and he focuses on the art & craft and not the commercial value of the songs, although they certainly HAVE *that*, too ...even the hidden Bonus Track, which is topical, and in-your-face funny (if they ever make a movie about John & Lorena Bobbitt, that is). John does not censor his writing, thank goodness ...he writes the story truthfully, as he perceives it; and there it is - almost like a newspaper report but with incredible visuals and emotional content. He KNOWS his craft, & his minimalist, excellent performance choices are very satisfying. Fiddler's Tune puts you AT the barn dance and fills your heart with true-love, wistful euphoria; You Won't Be Leaving Me Again is chillingly accurate while admirably telling the difficult story from the exact opposite perspective that most such songs (and there aren't many of them) do; Strong Wind is moving in its courageous look inside at what is a perplexing struggle in intimate relationships for (perhaps too) many of us; God Damn Shame hits you right between the eyes and puts you INSIDE the vignettes of common humanity ...and on and on. John's humor -sometimes simple & delightful and often downright twisted- is never far out of reach either. A very powerful work, highly recommended.

A must have folk CD, March 31, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Love Again (Audio CD)
This is what folk music should be all about. The songs on this CD follow the credo "less is more", much to the gratification of the listener. The music is simple, the lyrics piercing (usually to the heart, occasionally to one's pre-conceptions). Simple truths about life and relationship, revealed by these direct and uncluttered creations. If you have ever felt touched by folk music of any type and want to feel touched again, this is definitely a CD to add to your collection.
