5.0 out of 5 stars This book is a life-changing event
To say that Love and Awakening changed my life is an understatement. I found this book so moving that sometimes I could only read a few pages before I needed to stop and catch my breath. I truly believe that this book has the potential to change the lives of those who take its message to heart. Reading this book was like looking in a mirror. I've always known what the...

3.0 out of 5 stars Intense. Paradoxical. Strengths and Weaknesses
The first several chapters were pretty smooth reading and contained loads of valuable insight. One chapter, "Overcoming the Enemy", was spectacular and sparked a much-needed self-review. "Coemergent Realities" was also square on the mark. The first half of the book made me feel dreadfully uncomfortable, so I know the book inspires change. If it would only have continued...

To say that Love and Awakening changed my life is an understatement. I found this book so moving that sometimes I could only read a few pages before I needed to stop and catch my breath. I truly believe that this book has the potential to change the lives of those who take its message to heart. Reading this book was like looking in a mirror. I've always known what the author writes about, but never had the exact words for it. I have a background in psychology and have read and studied spiritual matters all my life, but I've never read a book that spoke so personally to me, and was such a clear and powerful synthesis of psychology, spirituality, and East/West concerns. This book--along with John Welwood's other book, Journey of the Heart, has been the most powerful teacher on relationship (both to myself and to others)I have yet encounterd. It is an awesome book of heart and profound sensitivity, and has had an enormous impact on my life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful sequel to Journey of the Heart., January 1, 2002
This review is from: Love and Awakening: Discovering the Sacred Path of Intimate Relationship (Paperback)
Welwood has crafted a masterful book. Although he expands on the material he presented in his previous book Journey of the Heart, this book can be read by itself. Journey of the Heart was like a roadmap of the terrain of intimate relationships. Love and Awakening provides dialogue from some of Welwood's clients rediscovering their personal authenticity in relationship. There are also brief sections throughout the book narrating a quality or observation about relationship that are truly stunning in its poetic clarity. It perfectly echos the truths we all know deep in our hearts. His section on the "Broken-Hearted Warrior" is the most poignant, eloquent and beautiful passage about the path of intimate relationship I have ever read. The real power and magic of this book is that it does not prescribe cures like a doctor towards a patient. It gently guides us to our own center, our own being and provides tools for awakening greater awareness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Warriors of the Heart, March 20, 2001

This review is from: Love and Awakening: Discovering the Sacred Path of Intimate Relationship (Paperback)
This is a very valuable book - not just for those in relationships - but for anyone interested in the path of personal development. Welwood writes lucidly and with authority: therapeutic and spiritual concepts and practices are clearly and accessibly presented. This book usefully develops the ideas outlined in Welwood's earlier Journey of the Heart. The inclusion of 'dialogues' gives readers an insight into the experiences of people Welwood has worked with - and this provides a very helpful practical model for readers wishing to explore their own lives in similar ways. Based in solid scholarship, but designed for the lay-reader, I heartily recommend this book to all who are interested in the 'warrior work' of looking into one's own heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply amazing., January 24, 2005

This review is from: Love and Awakening: Discovering the Sacred Path of Intimate Relationship (Paperback)
This is probably one of the best, if not the best book I have read about that huge topic of LOVE. Among all the books dealing with this topic, this one stands out because of the depth of its explanation and the poetry of its wording.

Welwood suggests that love is not simply a pure physical attraction. It could lift lovers to another level: the discovery of oneself. Love, according to the author is a journey, a path toward understanding oneself and one's partner. From there, if could lift lovers to a state of communion: they become warriors who travel on the same road toward spiritual enrichment. Viewed from this angle, love seems to be divine. It has the power of transforming people like any other thing in the world.

This is part of the eastern philosophy that has suggested back in the 6th century AC that:
"Love enjoyed by the ignorant
Becomes bondage.
That very same love
Tested by one with understanding
Brings liberation."

Using a combination of poetry, eastern philosophy (one ground two paths, alliance of warriors, suchness...) and western psychology, Welwood has been able to weave a tale inner fight and self-discovery that could lead lovers to enlightenment. Enlightenment, not in its religious sense, is defined as a constant state of happiness without suffering. And that is what we are searching for in our human condition.

This book should be read by anyone falling in love for the first or the hundredth time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Discover your own obstacles to truly satisfying intimacy, December 9, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Love and Awakening: Discovering the Sacred Path of Intimate Relationship (Paperback)
This was the core book for an adult-ed course in "Loving Exceedingly Well". It is decidedly NOT pop-psych and does not preach. It invites you to explore, in easily applied ways, your own deep obstacles to intimacy and work them through yourself and with your partner. This has had a more transformative affect on my own relationship and on the relationships of several other people in the class than years of therapy and all the other pop-psych books combined. But beware - it is not an easy course to embark on, but it will be worthwhile if you do.

This review is from: Love and Awakening: Discovering the Sacred Path of Intimate Relationship (Paperback)
I think this book is absolutely amazing in describing feelings, situations and the bond between relationships. Not only does this book help open eyes to resolve outter issues with your significant other but as well as inner issues that may cause problems in a relationship. If anyone is confused, overwhelmed or just plain stumbling through a relationship I recommend this read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely insightful! Compelling! Emotionally enlightening!, August 4, 1998

John Welwood's book provides a strong foundation of support and vast reservoir of knowledge that can enable one to take the risks inherent in any kind of emotional awakening. Daily reading has given me the courage to change aspects of my own "raw edges" as well as understand them in relation to my partner.

5.0 out of 5 stars So good & profound that I cannot express in words, September 14, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Love and Awakening: Discovering the Sacred Path of Intimate Relationship (Paperback)
I've been reading John Welwood and he is the best. But since I started reading Thomas Moore I can say that he does not fall behind. This book is about how to nurture your soul. How to re-connect with yourself and find food for your soul in your daily life. It is an amazing book and I cannot understand how so valuable things are being sold for just a few dollars. IMHO, Thomas's and John's books are invaluable.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's to the point and relevant, November 21, 2008

This review is from: Love and Awakening: Discovering the Sacred Path of Intimate Relationship (Paperback)
I've read several books on realionships - and I found "Love and Awakening..." Excellent. He doesn't fill the book with lot's of 'stories' although he does use a few to illustrate ideas, issues or behaviors.
For a pop-psychology type of read, he packs a lot into the subject of relationships .... not family dynamics, but 1:1 inimate, committed ones.
He brings up issues with men that never occured to me - and helped me to uderstand some of my behaviors - stemming from childhood and my parents, esp. mother.
I bought this book for myself and my grilfriend. As we live 2,000 miles apart (now) I thought it would be good for both us to read it before we met for our camping vacation and discuss our notes, underlines, etc., It was well worth it, and really helped to deepen our realionships (2-years0 and lessen our fears of ourselves and to each other.
Stongly recommend this book.
