GREAT,

For those of you that like a little bit of the old school and new school you dont have to look any further but to this soundtrack to Love and Basketball a great mixture of old school r&b tracks from the great Al Green 's Love and Happiness to the Butter smooth Sweet Thing by Rufus and Chaka Khan still one of my personal favorite tunes from back in the day .. Still does something to me everytime i hear it.. The early days of New Jack I Like- Guy is represented here as well .. To the new school Angie Stone's unforgettable soulful rendition Of Simply Red's Holding Back The years .. Donell Jones smooth I'll Go .. To the Supergroup Lucy Pearl Dance Tonight which is truly the best cut of the newer material.. Having people really anticipating their debut album.. A little bit of the old school hip hop is well represented here with two classic tracks It Takes Two from Rob Base and Ez Rock and MC Lyte's Lyte As A Rock.. also with good efforts Bilal , Black Eyed Peas.. This is really a great soundtrack.. it's a must to any one's collection that likes a little of both worlds..Old School and New School.. To those who wondering about that song that is played during the love scene between Epps/Lathan in the movie.. The song is called A Women's Work performed by Maxwell and it can be found on his Live Unplugged CD.. The only minor criticsm i have is that track that is mentioned and New Edition's Candy Girl wasnt included in the soundtrack other than that this is truly great stuff here

Great Stuff, but One Thing Missing,
By A Customer
This review is from: Love & Basketball: Music From The Motion Picture (Audio CD)
I love the songs - new & old school, espicially Angie Stone's "Holding Back the Years" (Old Simply Red). I really love the Me'Shell Ndegeocello song (Fool of Me) on the cd. I mainly bought the cd for the love song (the one played duringthe lead characters first love scene). It sounds like Maxwell, but it's nowhere to be found on the cd - what's up with that? Otherwise, a great selection.

Where's the rest...,

I like the soundtrack, but I was a little disappointed. The main reason I bought the CD was for the song thats being played while Quincy and Monica are in College after the Dick Vitale scene. I really want that song and I can't find it, I think that terrence blanchard should have put it on the soundtrack, The credits says that It is Hinda Hicks and the song is Our Destiny, but I can't find it. Also, He left the best songs out of it including Maxwell, New Edition, Johnny Kemp, Bobby Brown, Herb Alberts-Making love in the Rain. Really What's up wit that. If your going to make a soundtrack-please do it right. I bet this soundtrack would have been and stayed #1 forever if all of the songs were on it or atleast help us find the songs.

the Maxwell song,

The Maxwell song that everyone is asking about is called "This Woman's Work" by Kate Bush. It can be found on his Unplugged CD. It's also on a Felicity soundtrack and the soundtrack for "She's Having a Baby." I love that song, too, and was disappointed it wasn't on the soundtrack. Hope this helps you find it.

Changing the formula,

Okay, the new trend is to release a soundtrack for every African-American film that comes out. First off, I did not even know that there was a soundtrack. I saw the movie first and I was jamming in the movie theatre. The songs in the movie brought back wonderful memories from childhood and adolescence such as "It Takes two", "Lyte as a rock", and "I want to be your man". Unfortunately, three songs are not included on this album - "Candy girl" by New Edition, "Just got Paid" by Johnny Kemp and "This woman's work" by Maxwell.Nonetheless, this album was developed a new formula for making a successful soundtrack. Love and Basketball soundtrack is fused with both old school hip hop and soul music and new cuts by today's hottest artists like Donnell Jones and Angie Stone. It also remembers the classics such as "Love and Happiness" by Al Green and "Sweet Thang" by Rufus featuring Chaka Khan. Also, I must give props to "Fool of Me" by the diva of soundtrack tunes that enhance the scene within any movie, M'sell Ndegecello (for those of you who don't know her - "let me have you" was played during the shower scene between Stella and loverboy during "How Stella got her groove back". For serious music lovers - Plantation lullabies is a musthave). Also noteworthy cuts include "Complete Beloved" and "Dance Tonight" both taking hip hop soul music to the next level. I would definitely recommend this album. I own the following soundtracks: Soul Food, How Stella Got her Groove back, Life and Why do Fools Fall in love". This is far the best one! I listen to and ENJOY every track - which is rare for a CD these days.

....Continues a trend of good, quality soundtracks.,

After a huge slump in the soundtrack department, as LL would say, "Don't call it a comeback". After purchasing "The Best Man" and "Romeo Must Die", "Love And Basketball" has also made its place in my collection. The difference between this soundtrack and the previous two is that there is a mixture of new and old material. The previous two had all new songs on them. The soundtrack is only 12 songs, but the quality of the new songs mixed with the collection of old songs makes you forget this. The best of the new songs is clearly "Dance Tonight" by Lucy Pearl. How could you go wrong with Raphael Saadiq, formerly of Tony!Toni!Tone!, Dawn Robinson, formerly of En Vogue, and Ali Shaheed Muhammad, formerly of A Tribe Called Quest. The song has the same TTT appeal to it. Other highlights include Donell Jones' "I'll Go", Angie Stone's cover of Simply Red's "Holding Back The Years", and the excellent balance of old school songs. Three words, "Love And Happiness"! This gives someone that doesn't buy CDs too often a chance to own one of the greatest songs of all time. You also get the original version of "Sweet Thing" by Rufus & Chaka Khan and the late Roger Troutman's "I Wanna Be Your Man". This CD's overall presentation gets an A+ from me.

Fabulous CD for an equally great movie!,

The soundtrack to L&B really enhances the coming-of-age feel of the movie. I was about the same age as the characters in the movie when the various songs came out, and experienced many of the same things as Monica and Q. (I actually remember "It Takes 2" playing at one of my 1st college parties!) Pretty much every song on the L&B soundtrack is on point, but my absolute favorites are: "I Like" (Guy); "I Want to Be Your Man" (Roger); "Fool of Me" (Meshell Ndegeocello); and "I'll Go" (Donell Jones). The Donell Jones track in particular always brings a smile to my face - I suppose I just associate it the completely uplifting ending of the movie (and that adorable little girl that played Monica and Q's daughter!)
There is so much good music in the movie that naturally, all of the songs couldn't make it to the CD. "This Woman's Work" (Maxwell)--the to-die-for track that played during Monica and Q's poignant "first time" love scene--is not on the L&B soundtrack album :-( Neither is "Making Love in the Rain," which features Janet Jackson (one of my favorite artists of all time). But, the reality is, not every song that plays in a movie can make in onto a sountrack album. In fact, the missing tracks had the effect of introducing me to a couple of new artists, and new music from artists I already knew, since I had to go hunt down the missing tracks! For example, I found out that the inspirational song that plays while Monica is training her heart out and improving at USC is called "Our Destiny," by Hinda Hicks. To respond to someone who previously asked (I think?), the song is available on a limited-edition EMI archive re-issue of her album "Everything to Me." In many ways, L&B made many of the soundtrack songs iconic for me. I can't help but think of Monica and Q's touching and steamy love scenes when I hear "This Woman's Work" or "I Like" (respectively), and the final one-on-one game between the two when I listen to "Fool of Me." The latter, in particular, seems like it was made for that final scene. Also, I always remember exactly what I was feeling when those tracks played during the movie, i.e., getting misty-eyed during the 1st love scene and bawling like a baby at the end when Monica and Q embraced after their game ;-) If you liked the movie, you absolutely MUST cop the soundtrack. Even if you've never seen the movie (and you really should!), you should still pick this album up if you like good music and ol skool/nu skool jams. An asset to any CD collection.

Somewhat Misleading but a Great CD,

I liked the soundtrack but I was somewhat disappointed because there were 2 songs I really liked and only 1 of them were on the soundtrack. The main song where they realized how they felt and basicaly the love scene, the song wasnt on the soundtrack. I felt that it was the most important song and I looked everywhere for it only to finally land it in Napster. But other then that its a great CD :-)

...There are so many songs that are not on the CD!! What the company should have done is released the soundtrack as a double-CD with ALL the songs! I would have definitely bought it, but now I'm not so sure. I'm in my mid-thirties, and I miss all the "old-school" jams!!
