I BOUGHT THIS ALBUM WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT IN THE LATE 1970'S AND LOVED IT SO MUCH, I WORE OUT ABOUT THREE VINYL COPIES. IT'S STILL ONE OF MY FAVORITE ALLTIME ALBUMS, WITH SOME GREAT BACK UP SUPPORT BY SOME OF MY FAVORITE MUSICIANS, LIKE FLORA PURIM, AIRTO, JOHNNY GUITAR WATSON,BYRON WHITE, AND LOTS OF OTHERS. GET IT IF YOU CAN FIND ONE.

Out of all the BAD stuff Duke has done, this is, if not his best, is among the top projects he has ever done. This is being proven by the fact that it can't be found for less than 120.00. It's understandable...It is a superior piece of work. If you can find it, get it. If you can get it for a good price, call me. Peace.

George Duke Under The Influence Of FZ,
By mp3support@wi.rr.com (WI, United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: I Love the Blues (Audio CD)
George was Frank Zappa's keyboard artist on a number of FZ projects around the late 60's and early 70's. This album reflects FZ's influence. The musical styles range from blues to rock to jazz. Like Frank Zappa, George Duke attracted a lot of talented artist to work with him, such as Johnny Guitar Watson and Flora Purim. A very creative album for the (at the time) up and coming George Duke. This is a great album but also a historically important one. The CD is very difficult to find and can be expensive. However, iTunes now has all the songs on this album available for download. I highly recommend it.

... one of the greatest soul/ jazz/ blues/ funk fusion releases ever. The musicianship here is sensational, most notably GD, Ndugu, Byron Miller, Ruth Underwood and others. As another reviewer mentioned, heavy Zappa influence on several tracks. Any Zappa lover who doesn't have this is crazy (is that an oxymoron?). No weak tracks, many good ones, several truly great ("Prepare Yourself", "Ego - Giant Child Within"). This is a truly astonishing cd.

Aside from the quizical and highly racist cover art this album seems to be one of a few CD's available from Duke's MPS days in the mid 1970's.George Duke is still in the key of making very diverse albums-from the pure 12-bar blues (featuring Johnny Guitar Watson" on the tital song and funky R&B like "Chariout",elaborate fusionlike 'Giantchild Within Us-Ego" and "Sister Serene",the hard rockin' "Rokkinrowl,I Don't Know" and the original version of "Someday" make this a must purchase-if you can.Look for this and/or "Three Originals" because they are CLASSIC stuff!

I first purchased this album when I was in college around 1977, but never until now been able to find this particular George Duke CD. Thank you Amazon. The music on this CD still holds up after 34 years.
