Like the lust of comets colliding in Celestial Hysteria,

This review is from: The Love Book (Paperback)
Lenore Kandel is an ICON of both the Beat and Hippie era's. She read this poem on stage at the Human Be-In in Golden Gate Park on January 15, 1967. I know because I was there and never forgot her deep spine tingling poetry delivered in that psychedelic convention. Now in her mid 70's she will be appearing again at the Summer of Love 40th Anniversary event scheduled for September 2, 2007. She may have some new erotic poetry to read at this event.
I would say The Love Book captures what was going on all over San Francisco during that first Summer of Love -"the lust of comets colliding in Celestial Hysteria". This is for adults only.

You're a divine animal,

This review is from: The Love Book. (Paperback)
Seized by police in 1966 for violating state obscenity laws, The Love Book is a holy ode to sex. But not just any sex -- loving sex, divine sex. (I think I read that she had been studying Tibetan buddhism &/or tantra.) She was a student of buddhism, and she embraced the "divine animal."
The book is very short, only 6 pages long, and it consists of four poems: God/Love Poem and To F*** with Love Phase I, II and III. Almost the entire book is available online. God/Love Poem and TFWL III can be found on divineanimaldotcom, TFWL II can be found in Jack Foley's 1960s timeline on bigbridgedotorg, and a selection from TFWLI (along with an essay on Lenore Kandel and The Love Book) can be found on p. 102 of Reconstructing the Beats ed by Jennie Skerl, which is available for viewing on Amazon. She has some similar poems in her collection Word Alchemy, and a poem called "Seven of Velvet" (which I don't think is available anywhere else) in the collection The Erotic Impulse ed by David Steinberg (along with "Eros/Poem" which can be found in Word Alchemy). Wikipedia has a comprehensive list of other collections containing her works. Fans of the beats or of raw, honest, "holy erotica" will probably enjoy these poems. |
