Book Description

Love.com (Viz Media) September 2, 2008
Risa Koizumi is the tallest girl in class, and the last thing she wants is the humiliation of standing next to Atsushi Otoni, the shortest guy. Fate and the whole school have other ideas, and the two find themselves cast as the unwilling stars of a bizarre romantic comedy duo. Rather than bow to the inevitable, Risa and Atsushi join forces to pursue their true objects of affection. But in the quest for love, will their budding friendship become something more complex?

Risa and Ôtani are totally dating! But it's totally weird. Risa is so used to treating Ôtani like a friend that she has no idea how to act like a girlfriend. Luckily, Ôtani knows just where to go to save a failing date. Could this be happily ever after? Not if Risa's new rival has anything to say about it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Meet Mimi, Super-Cute Psycho Girl!, August 26, 2008
This review is from: Love Com, Vol. 8 (Love.com (Viz Media)) (Paperback)
Risa is still walking on air after Ootani said that he liked her, despite the fact that things between them haven't changed that much. She's excited about the prospect of her first date with Ootani, but soon realizes that she has no idea how a girlfriend is supposed to act.

I liked this part very much. I'm glad that Risa and Ootani don't live happily ever after just because they got together. They continue to face real obstacles to their romance, and this shows that a relationship is something that continues to grow and develop. It's also funny to watch Risa's dramatic reactions to the situation.

Soon after the date, Risa visits Ootani's house to study. Here, she meets Ootani's neighbor, Mimi, a tall, pretty middle-school girl. Mimi acts very sweet and innocent at first, but as soon as Ootani turns his back, she turns on Risa. Risa is not sure what to make of this at first, but it turns out that Mimi is jealous. She has liked Ootani for a long time, but gave up on him because of her height. Needless to say, she's not too happy about Risa dating Ootani. But although Mimi dislikes Risa, Risa sympathizes with her. The two almost bond over their height complexes, until Mimi catches herself. But Risa gets more defensive when Mimi threatens to steal Ootani from her.

I have to say that the Mimi arc is one of the weaker arcs in the series. It's not bad by any means, but I felt that Risa's ability to sympathize with her rivals was already established with Seiko's arc. There are a couple of differences between these two parts, but Mimi's story could've been shorter. Still, it's sweet and funny, and I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars series still going strong!, April 16, 2009

This review is from: Love Com, Vol. 8 (Love.com (Viz Media)) (Paperback)
i was really worried that the series would slow down once risa and otani got together, but i was relieved to see that this volume is as great as ever. actually i was laughing out loud even more, because even though they're together (and risa spends less time crying) risa's still insecure and still alternating from trying to be a perfect, cute girlfriend to screaming and giving otani meathead punches, and not to mention her newest rival. i didn't think the story arc with risa's rival, otani's tall neighbor mimi, was just a rehash because whereas seiko-chan was cute, mimi is cute on the outside but totally evil on the inside and threatens risa in all kinds of hilarious ways. lots of great scenes here, although i think it may be a bit on the short side compared to the others. it also includes a special section that was run in the magazine that shows a timeline of the whole series and tests you on all sorts of love com trivia, like how many earrings haruka has. anyway, still highly recommended and i'm really looking forward to the next volume.
