Nothing worth doing is easy--and that includes loving a cop. Being a member of the law enforcement community is a source of pride for officers and families alike. But long hours, unpredictable shifts, and the crisis-driven nature of the profession can turn life on the home front into an emotional roller coaster ride. Dr. Ellen Kirschman, a psychologist who’s worked with police officers for more than 20 years, gives you practical ways to deal with the challenges that come with the territory. Packed with stories from cops and their significant others, this book explains how to reduce spillover from on-the-job stress and cope with loneliness or worry during extended deployments. Dr. Kirschman acknowledges the tough realities of post-9/11, post-Katrina law enforcement, and she offers frank, realistic suggestions for handling serious issues like alcohol abuse and domestic violence. She also covers special topics for women and minorities on the force. Whether you read it from cover to cover or reach for it when problems arise, I Love a Cop is an indispensable tool that everyone in your family can depend on.
People always ask if I'm married to a cop because of the title of my book. I'm not, I'm married to a remodeling contractor. But I do love a fire fighter, my older brother, who served as a volunteer fire fighter for sixteen years.
I'm a clinical psychologist, consultant, and trainer with over twenty years experience working with public safety personnel, their agencies, and their families. I'm co-founder, along with Dr. Lorraine Greene of the website, policefamilies.com. In 2000 I had the honor to be named Woman of Distinction by the Police Chiefs Spouses Worldwide. In 2010 I was given an award by the police and public safety division of the American Psychological Association for outstanding contribution to police psychology.
I travel world-wide giving workshops, seminars and keynote speeches. Here is a sample of some of my workshops: "Bringing it Home: Strengthening Your Police Family-a Workshop for Couples"; "Target Hardening: Self-care Skills for Police Officers" ; "The First Responder's First Responder: Creating Effective Family Orientations"; and "Healing Our Protectors: A Workshop for Clinicians Who Treat First Responders." You can read about these workshops and more on my website, www.ellenkirschman.com.
