5.0 out of 5 stars Dr. Frank - The Cole Porter of Punk, August 8, 2001
This review is from: Love Is Dead (Audio CD)
Another absolutely brilliant album from Berkeley, California's mad genius, Dr. Frank. Some of the other Amazon reviews already touched on MTX's strengths -- irresistible melodys, driving power chords, and the densely-constructed, deftly delivered, always hilarious wordplay of the band's lyricist, Dr. Frank. Many MTX fans consider this the band's best effort, and while it certainly is an amazingly good record, don't neglect to check out their earlier releases, as well as the "weird" new stuff that sounds like a mix of Television Personalities and The Go-Gos. Hard to go wrng with these guys.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still one of my favorite albums ever, July 24, 2009
This review is from: Love Is Dead (Audio CD)
Awwwwe - the glory days of pop-punk. It's somewhat sad that MTX never got the appreciation they deserved. Sure, Dr. Frank (who, all things considered, is MTX) has gone on to be a semi-successful author, but MTX's songs, especially on this album, should have become punk-rock classics instead of a mostly forgotten footnote. The album itself, for better and worse, represents pop-punk to a bouncy core - it will make you smile, jump around, and break your heart all in about 45 seconds.

This was really the peak of the mountain for MTX as well - the next ablum - "...Revenge is Sweet and so are You" was good, if not uncomfortably similar to this one (on a side note - the song "Love is Dead" actually appears on the follow-up - if that doesn't sum up this band or this era in punk music I don't know what does). MTX then decided to slow things down a bit, with predictable results, and soon faded from scene.

There really isn't much I can say except buy the album, it's one of my all time favorites.

4.0 out of 5 stars Criminally underappreciated Power Pop band, December 12, 2005

Alex Fencl (Cleveland, OH) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Love Is Dead (Audio CD)
I love the Mr. T Experience. They make tightly crafted Power Pop songs that are nauseatingly catchy. "Love is Dead" is definitely my favorite. Yes, their body of work that spans over 20 years is rather monotonous and they make the same record over and over (ala Ramones), but it is still fun to listen to. I play them on my radio show here in central Ohio nearly every week. "I Fell for You" and "I'd Do Anything for You" are pop gems. It is sad in a way becuase they never received the acclaim that they deserve, probably because they play a genre of music that is tired and infested with cliches. Despite this, I still revisit this record from time-to-time and re-live my summer at a 13 year old punk. Check these guys out, despite the fact that they should have thrown in the towel for good years ago.
