Book Description

May 1, 2011
Luciano Hernando Valdez is his Latin American nation's most celebrated novelist and he's suffering from writer's block. So far his latest great work comprises the words 'The scrawny yellow cat crossed the road'. He's tried all his usual tricks to get back on track - he's had a few debates with his trusty colleagues at the university, he's had an affair with the banker's wife, nothing will work. Until he meets Caterina. Beautiful, young and one of his biggest fans, she has idolised him since she was a child and he has inspired her to write. Convinced that falling in love with her, spending every minute he can alongside her, moulding her to his world, will unlock something and enable him to write, he pursues her and soon enough, he falls headlong into her arms. But it's only a matter of time before he murders her.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'It's a deft romance, an exercise in camp, and a fable about male pride and its pitfalls ... very readable' The Guardian. 'Elegant, wise, ironic - a gripping and impressive piece of work' Times Literary Supplement. 'There is much to admire about the way Nicoll takes this standard line-up of South American types and fleshes it out ... Short chapters become shorter still as the tension mounts towards a denouement that the first sentence of the book has already announced. It takes confidence to remove this potential element of suspense but the decision pays off ... the pages turn quickly, the plot thickens and rises, and when the book is finally put down, there is little to stop you looking forward to Nicoll's next one' Scottish Review of Books. 'The best Scottish novel I read this year' The Scotsman. 'With The Love and Death of Caterina, Andrew Nicoll triumphantly cleared the second novel hurdle ... there are moments reminiscent of Graham Greene' The Glasgow Herald.

I loved Andrew Nicoll's first book The Good Mayor, and for this reason I have been waiting to read more from him, and The Love and Death of Caterina definitely doesn't disappoint. But what is readily evident after reading just a few pages into this book is that Nicoll is not a one-note; if you see the title of this book thinking you're in for a retelling of The Good Mayor, you're in for a pleasant surprise. This isn't a love story. And it's not a mystery, since right from the beginning we are made privy to what becomes of Caterina. This is not a "who done it" -- but rather, this is all about the "why did he do it?" -- and because Nicoll makes us fall so completely in love with Caterina, a reader can't help but voraciously pursue the answer to this question until the book reaches its devastating resolution. The Love and Death of Caterina is a brilliant but haunting must read.
