too much repetition,
This review is from: Love Me To Death (Pinnacle True Crime) (Paperback)
the author does write well, but it gets kinda tiring when huge sections are repeated over and over. for example, an incident is described. then, described again -- almost word for word -- during the investigation chapters. then again -- again, word for word -- during the testimony chapters. obviously, the initial description was taken from the court transcripts. i don't see the need to go verbatem again during the testimony chapters. makes reading the book quite tedious. i was skipping pages at a time because it was stuff i'd read earlier -- twice or more before.
however, this is a scary story and keeps you on alert for sweet-talkers.

Love Me to Death,
By Gail Swetman (Mathis, TX USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Love Me To Death (Pinnacle True Crime) (Paperback)
If you are a lover of true crime, this book is for you. I just could not put it down. You just want to keep turning those pages to find out what happens next. To think this man started to believe his own lies, and after treating the women in this book so gentlemanly as his mother had taught him; to then turn around and so nonchalantly do what he did to them with no care in the world is frightening. I could understand the sadness he felt when his mother passed away and the anger and rage of being raped in the military, I can relate to. But, what in fact makes a person step that foot over the line into insanity is a question, I've never got a clear cut answer to.

Another wolf in sheep's clothing.,
By
This review is from: Love Me To Death (Pinnacle True Crime) (Paperback)
"Wild Bill Cody" was a leech and a master manipulator but it's not surprising how he was able to lure so many women into his trap. Once he was able to manage many relationships and get his filthy paws on his girlfriends' cash, he was able to line up the next victim by wining them and dining them with money from the previous unsuspecting victim.
Eventually he started to unravel when too many people were asking too many questions and the events that followed were too terrible for words. I'm glad I read this story, I had gotten this book as a Christmas gift but I was really disappointed that even though the back cover states "Includes 16 Pages of Shocking Photos" - there was no picture section in this book and there did not appear to be any pages missing so I'm guessing it was some kind of printing or publishing error. I found the content to be very repetitive at times, sometimes repeating the same facts or comments up to three times throughout the book. This is my 2nd Steve Jackson book and I will read more.

I thought the book was well written and interesting to read in a morbid kind of way. It's shocking that so many intelligent and kind hearted women were taken in by Bill "Cody" Neal. But, he was a diabolical liar and became whatever the women wanted and/or needed at that time in their lives and he was relentless in his pursuit until he got what he wanted. His background and personality traits, even as a child, already exhibited the traits of serial killers, most notably that he tortured and killed animals. In his own retelling of his justification in killing the animals, it's clear he thinks of them as objects or something to be observed under a microscope rather than loveable little creatures that are entitled to their place in the world.
There is such a dichotomy between the despicable human being he was while engaged in conning women out of their life savings, brutally killing and raping them in contrast to the man at trial that acted as if he was willing to accept any punishment in return for doing what he did. This is one person that should never, ever, under any circumstances be released. He is able to look too normal and fit into good society when in reality he doesn't deserve to be among people who understand what it is to have compassion and love.

I liked this book. "Cody" Neal is a real peice of work.
His rants were totally off the wall. This was a good read. Just a little slow during the court precedings.

Cassanova in a Cowboy Duster,
By
This review is from: Love Me To Death (Pinnacle True Crime) (Paperback)
William "Wild Bill" Cody Neal preyed upon women. With his good looks and seductive smile, it isn't hard to imagine how these vunerable young women were sucked into his web of deceit.
It was just a game to him. Seduce them, promise them his love, initiate the physical and verbal abuse, and then drain them of every penny they had. Eventually even that wouldn't be enough; murder, for Neal, was the next logical step. Steve Jackson relates the little-known story of this modern day, albeit rough-around-the-edges, Cassanova in his book Love Me To Death. Although it may be one more story of a wolf in sheep's clothing, it is a fascinating, and at times infurating, tale of a man who aimed to, and self-proclaimed to be, "better than Teddy Bundy."

Nobody could call this serial killer an abused child,
By
This review is from: Love Me To Death (Pinnacle True Crime) (Paperback)
In fact, his mother doted on him. He was the favorite among her children, and she was even able to overlook his abuse of animals.
Neal apparently appreciated women. He wooed them with rose strewn petals over the bed, long hours of listening carefully to their conversation, and rides in limos and expensive dinners. The women he sought were vulnerable. All too easily bowled over by his charm. Rebecca and Candace were so taken in by Neal that they gave him, or lent him, all the money they had. But, as Neal explained, his own money was tied up in a trust fund battle. And then, when the women finally started to see through the unending lies, his murdered them. By hitting them over the head with a maul. Makes for grim but absorbing reading.

chilling and hard to put down,

I found this book especially interesting for a few reasons, one, I live in Denver. Two this guy used to come into the bar where I worked! Talk about SCARY! I just happened to pick this book up with other true crime books and when I got to reading this one I kept looking at his face and thinking he was familuar to me, then I read about the habits he had in the bar and it clicked I remembered him. It was hard to put it down anyway but after I realized this it was REALLY hard! Great Book, I enjoy Steve Jackson's work I highly recommend this and his other true crime books.

Love Me To Death,

This is the true story of the Denver lady killer some call "Wild Bill Cody" self claimed to be "better than Ted Bundy." Why you'd want to say that about yourself is anyone's guess. But this guy was far from normal that's for sure. It's a good book, but the author does seem to repeat details often. But it's easy to skim it over. This is another book that IS NOT for the sweemish!! I wouldn't really see anyone under 18-20 reading this book, it's just too much. He really was terrible, which is why he's on death row.
