4.0 out of 5 stars Love Games with Consequences, August 31, 2005

This review is from: Love on the Dotted Line: A Novel (Hardcover)
Up and coming lawyer Morgan Montgomery is tired of the one-sided relationships with devious playas and she's not going to take it anymore! There's nothing like a black woman scorned, so Morgan vows that she'll never again "put out," and put up with men's lies for free. So, she creates a "love contract" that any man she gets involved with must sign before he gets the "goods," which entitles her to a monogamous relationship after the deed is done. If he violates the contract, he'll get hit where it hurts the most-his wallet. Morgan puts her contract into action when she gets her latest love interest to sign it. But she soon finds out he's just like the rest. Now, she's ready to wage war in the courtroom against the scheming playa, to protect the hearts of women everywhere.

LOVE ON THE DOTTED LINE is David Talbert's second novel. In it he builds an entertaining story of love gone wrong which is filled with tons of hilarious twists. Mr. Talbert delivers the story with great dialogue, humor and character's who will leave you thinking long after the story has ended. LOVE ON THE DOTTED LINE is a fast-paced read which will have you laughing out loud at times and is sure to make a lot of women wish it were real life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Contractual Love, July 24, 2005
This review is from: Love on the Dotted Line: A Novel (Hardcover)
In his latest novel, Love on the Dotted Line, David E. Talbert uses humor and wit to explore the issue of infidelity. Morgan Montgomery, a successful contract lawyer, is reveling in her relationship with Marcus Alexander. On her birthday, she expects to receive an expensive gift she sees hidden in his closet but instead she sees her jewelry on the arm of one of Marcus' other women. Dejected and depressed, Morgan's friends take her out and in a drunken stupor she comes up with the idea of creating a contract (complete with terms, conditions, and consequences) that a man must sign insuring his fidelity in exchange for mind blowing sex. Initially the contract was just a product of her venting, but she soon meets Charles Sealant, a charming "pre-owned" car salesman, and gets him to sign on the dotted line. When she feels that Charles is in breach of contract, what ensues is a hilarious; drama filled situation that almost puts Jerry Springer to shame.

David E. Talbert has penned a witty, well written novel that sheds a different light on the expectations that men and women have in relationships and their views on infidelity. Although at times the story was predictable, it flowed well and kept me intrigued up until the end. The main characters were completely believable and I especially enjoyed how the secondary characters, Morgan's friends: Altima, Ophelia, and Andre added to the story. Overall, Love on the Dotted Love is an enjoyable read that I would recommend to anyone looking for a light, entertaining, yet discussion-prompting read.

After a whirlwind romance that falls unexpectedly yet predictably short, Morgan gets him to see the error of his ways, which he doesn't, and takes him to court for "breach of contract". the results of that alone is worth it;

4.0 out of 5 stars i'm sorry but..., August 4, 2008
i love this book. it's too funny and too real. the trail in itself was crazy. the way relationships are broken down all you could do when you read it was nod your head and say "yup". i admit it was predictable, but if yourve seen any of his plays that was to be expected.i adored micheal, even though his part wasnt but that bg. but come one-- you tell me what man would go after a woman after she just won a trrail against a man for basically breaking her heart. i tell you that dude was in love (lol). he better marry her! all in all it was a good read it did what it was supposed to do. that was make me laugh and make me think.
i would love to see another one sometime this decade david! lol

4.0 out of 5 stars fast-paced, funny, poignant and sexy, June 8, 2008
Morgan works at a law firm, so it makes sense that when she catches her boyfriend cheating on her (by way of a tennis bracelet she found in his closet that turned out to be a present for the other woman), she turns to the law for a solution.

Egged on by her best friend Altima, and Ophelia, the outspoken woman nobody likes, but who's somehow become part of their threesome, Morgan comes up with a dating contract, in which she promises great sex in return for honesty.

When she starts dating a sexy car dealer, she gets him to sign the contract. When she catches him cheating, she sues him.

This was a fun, fun read. Despite the occasional predictability (did anyone not know that the tennis bracelet in the closet was not for Morgan?), and the legal implausibility, which knocked it down to a 4-star read for me, it was fast-paced, funny, occasionally poignant, and sexy.

The characters were interesting, women you could relate to--well, hopefully not to Ophelia, but even she was three-dimensional, and we learn what's behind her prickly exterior. Mostly, it was a story of fun revenge, about sticking up for yourself and not settling for less than you deserve, and about the power of friendship.

I'll keep an eye out for more of David E. Talbert's books.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Love on the Dotted Line: A Novel (Hardcover)
Just blah...you cannot sue someone over a broken heart in court....I know it is fiction but make it a good one. Morgan's character deserved better than a horn blowing crazy psycho. She is a lawyer and a good one for that matter...she deserved to be potrayed with class.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read in between the lines, June 6, 2006
I originally read Love on the Dotted Line in hardback, but when it was re-released in paperback, I found myself reading it again. This award winning playwright has transposed his writing skills into book format by penning an entertaining book filled with comedy and romance. Morgan Chase finds out that her boyfriend, Marcus Alexander, isn't as committed to her as she is to him. Morgan devises a document where any potential mate will have to sign, guaranteeing their fidelity. If by some reason, he doesn't live up to the agreement, she has legal rights to take him to court. What happens from there will have you eagerly turning the pages.
