3.0 out of 5 stars Love Is in the Earth: A Kaleidoscope of Crystals
I bought this book years ago and found it at first useful to some extent. But you really have to intuitively pick through the words to find the gems and the relevance to the crystals' use in your particular situation in order to use it to full effect.
One passage in the lengthy explanation might be all that you needed to know, and all that is relevant. That might be...

This review is from: Love is in the Earth: A Kaleidoscope of Crystals - The Reference Book Describing the Metaphysical Properties of the Mineral Kingdom (Paperback)
This particular "Melody Book" (other Melody books cover other "facets" of stones... like color pictures, application of stones, etc.), is about as comprehensive a book as one could hope for, regarding the metaphysical properties of particular crystals and stones. It's very rare that you'll find a type of stone (no matter how obscure) that isn't listed here.

My only beef with it is that stones are more individualized with what they're suited for, than Melody would have you believe. (For instance, all of a certain kind of amethysts aren't suited for exactly the same thing, and the same goes true for all of any kind of stone...

Still, it is pretty much "the encyclopedia". (I'd also highly recommend, "Stone Empowerment", by Jane Hightower... Not as comprehensive, in terms of covering "all the stones", but it has practical info (including cautions) that simply doesn't exist in the Melody books.

5.0 out of 5 stars This single book is an incredible reference for crystals., August 4, 2002

This review is from: Love is in the Earth: A Kaleidoscope of Crystals - The Reference Book Describing the Metaphysical Properties of the Mineral Kingdom (Paperback)
This book has MANY things going for it.

the author discusses various types of crysyals (clusters, dendric, gateway, generator, manifestation, obelisk, etc).

Then goes on to other sections (acquiring, dedication, cleansing, awakening, charging, programming, meditation, protection, making elixirs, etc).

Then the larger portion of the book is used to list the properties of hundreds of different kinds or stones. The author even goes so far to list the astrological sign, and which number the stones are associated with.

This book is an incredible resource for information about crystals; but I have three little nitpicks.

1. The Author lists the use of salt water to cleanse your crystals on page 54. I do not recommend this method because salt is a corrosive agent, and repeated cleansing in salt water could break down the lattice structure of crystals.

I DO recommend cleansing stones by the following methods.

a. smudging them in the smoke of a purifying herb or incense.

b. placing the crystals in sunlight.

c. burrying them in the ground so the negative energies can be transmuted.

2. I wish the author had listed the hardness of the assorted stones. This way you could use assorted stones of similar hardness so they did not damage one another. It would not be wise to carry a peice of Clear Quartz in a pocket with a peice of Moldavite. Moldavite is only 5.5 on the hardness scale where Quartz is a 7.0, Boji stones are 7.4. Ruby is 9, and Diamond is 10.

3. This book with 700+ pages is quite difficult to hold and read. So I would recommend that you read about the first 100 pages that discusses the assorted types of crystals, programming crystals, cleansing crystals, etc; then set the book on the shelf and use it as a reference guide when you want to find the properties of the assorted crystals as you acquire them.

Aloha nui loa (I love you very much)

5.0 out of 5 stars A to Z of Crystals, February 6, 2004
This review is from: Love is in the Earth: A Kaleidoscope of Crystals - The Reference Book Describing the Metaphysical Properties of the Mineral Kingdom (Paperback)
This marvellous reference work tells you everything about the metaphysical properties and use of crystals.

The chapter Configurations describes the shapes and structures of the mineral kingdom, from the Ankh to the Window Crystal. There are chapters on Numerical Vibrations, Master Numbers and Preparatory Methodology, which serve as guides for those who wish to speed up their progress on the spiritual path. The last mentioned chapter deals with acquiring, dedicating, cleansing, awakening, charging and programming your crystals.

The chapter Practical Applications provides information on crystal meditation, protection, elixirs and how to treat food, plants, your car and your aura with crystals. The chapter Additional Definitions serves as a glossary of terms, from Akashic Records to Yin-Yang.

The main body of the book consists of an alphabetical list of crystals and their properties, from Acanthite to Zunyite. Here the appearance of the stone and its metaphysical and healing qualities are discussed. Astrological correspondences and numbers are also provided.

The book has a beautiful cover painting, Crystals Of Life, by Charley Berryhill and concludes with a thorough index. It is a very useful and extensive guide to crystals. My only complaint is the lack of photographs or illustrations that would facilitate the identification of individual stones.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love is in the Book !!, November 9, 2001
This review is from: Love is in the Earth: A Kaleidoscope of Crystals - The Reference Book Describing the Metaphysical Properties of the Mineral Kingdom (Paperback)
Melody's book is extraordinary and outstanding in the field of metaphysical properties of crystals. You will use "Love is in the Earth" as a standard reliable reference to many kinds of crystals and gemstones, minerals and metals, from Amazonite (no relation to Amazon.com)to Zoisite. The information is succinct in identifying the numerological and astrological significance of each crystal, including physical, emotional and psycho-spiritual meanings. My one beef about "Love is in the Earth" is that Melody includes many crystals not generally available at crystal stores, through gemmologists, rock shops, or gem and mineral clubs. In fact, a few gemmologists told me that some of the names used in the book are different than their field names, making it difficult to identify and locate. Some are even so rare that trying to get these elaborate crystals is next to impossible. So, be aware that you may not get some of the crystals mentioned in the book! Aside from that, "Love is in the Earth" is a valuable tool to anyone needing to know the esoteric healing properties of gems and minerals.

blessings all, i have a vast array of books regarding crystals, stones, and minerals, and this one is by far the most extensive! A-Z and everything but the kitchen sink...Melody sure knows her minerals, and gives nice long (sometimes too long lol)descriptions of properties;scientific, mythological, and metaphysical.the borders of most of my pages in this very long book are all marked up with notes and experiences and such...its priceless to me.i want to take it everywhere!only two small drawbacks: 1.) no pictures and 2.)no mention of how certain crystals and stones can deplete energies and should be used with caution based on toxicity...(i would imagine anyone owning this book may have other books and their own intuition to guide them, however...)other than that, wondeeeeful!

This review is from: Love is in the Earth: A Kaleidoscope of Crystals - The Reference Book Describing the Metaphysical Properties of the Mineral Kingdom (Paperback)
This is a pretty comprehensive book about the meanings of various stones. Although it is not all-inclusive, it covers far more than most people will ever need. It is the best of this type I have ever seen. There are no photos, but the book describes the stone, it's appearance, color ranges, vibrational numbers, astrological signs and all the stones' properties. More importantly, it goes into significant detail on the health (helps with anxiety, blood pressure, etc.) and metaphysical properties of the stone (assists in clarvoyance, etc.). The book includes precious and semi-precious gemstones (diamond, topaz, peridot), as well as other stones (jasper, etc), even metals, such as gold and silver.

Even if you want to stay on the basic side of life, there are plenty of good energy stones, like rose quartz or amethyst. I recently gave rose quartz to a co-worker who was getting a little too stressed and told him to keep it on his desk. Now, you can "poo poo" me all you want, I see a huge difference. I used to laugh at this stuff too, till I realized I was wrong.

I have friends who cut, polish, and wrap various stones. I like to select a stone (or a combination of stones), have them wrapped, and then look them up in this book to see "why" I bought it/them. Whether you believe that stones possess and carry certain energies or not, you can have fun with this book. Personally, I've found it to be quite educational and revealing.

Update: Dec 2007--I still LOVE this book! I use it all the time. You would be amazed how "right-on-target" it continues to be for me when I look up something. I recently had a co-worker friend stop by and she was wearing a very unique necklace that had obviously been designed for her. To those who are into metaphysics, it had a Japanese symbol on it, overlaid with a triangle, and a special stone in the center. Of course, the symbolism drew my eyes like a magnet and I asked. The stone was alexandrite. Her husband and son had the pendant made for her after her cancer surgery as a token of how much she meant to them. Also, if you don't know it, true alexandrite is VERY expensive. Anyway, I opened the book to alexandrite and handed it to her. I said "read it". She did and she was amazed how well its meaning fell right into place for her.

When I have a pendant made for someone as a gift, I select the stone first. I look up the meaning later and give them a copy of the meaning. It is ALWAYS on target! This book helped open me up to a whole new world--new to me anyway.

This review is from: Love is in the Earth: A Kaleidoscope of Crystals - The Reference Book Describing the Metaphysical Properties of the Mineral Kingdom (Paperback)
This is NOT a picture book of rocks and gems. Rather, it is a comprehensive encyclopaedia of everything that is known and believed about the rock or gem by people of various disciplines and power. Psychic, mystic, curious -- whatever the question, it's likely you'll find the answer here. That is, everything but the picture. Still, it's a "must-have" that will not disappoint you.

5.0 out of 5 stars The first COMPLETE reference for crystals and minerals, February 11, 2003
This review is from: Love is in the Earth: A Kaleidoscope of Crystals - The Reference Book Describing the Metaphysical Properties of the Mineral Kingdom (Paperback)
I found this book in 1995, and my copy is now a well-thumbed book with notes in the margins. I look upon it as the crystal healer's Bible. I have had it for almost ten years now, and it is still the most up-to-date reference I can find. I would love to see yet another updated edition from Melody. A must for anyone who is interested in the healing power of crystals and minerals.

4.0 out of 5 stars rather intense, but still cumbersome, May 2, 2006
This review is from: Love is in the Earth: A Kaleidoscope of Crystals - The Reference Book Describing the Metaphysical Properties of the Mineral Kingdom (Paperback)
This is a lovely reference book about the metaphysical applications of hundreds of minerals and configurations thereof. While it is comprehensive in terms of the quantity of minerals discussed, each entry is not given equal weight. Many of the minerals listed therein are simply added for the goal of covering as many minerals as possible.

This book really is invaluable to the student or master of the crystalline world. However, exercise caustion to understand that this book alone should not be used to look up stones; reading every entry is likely to cause one to want every mineral. Look up stones as they are new to you or after purchasing them.

The downfalls of this series is really the sheer amount of volumes; one must purchase several books to get a comprehensive understanding of Melody's view on the topic. The original (and also the update) do not contain pictures, and a separate volume must be purchased for the photographs. The pictorial updates include a lot more information, including etymology of mineral names, chemical formulae, and photographs.
