Editorial Reviews

A consistent seller over nearly 25 years, Love has sold over a million in North America. The expanded edition is a 2 disc set featuring the album re-mastered for the first time from the original studio digital tapes alongside a bonus disc featuring all the tracks from their 1985 UK singles, many of which were only previously available in the USA on the limited Rare Cult box set issued in 2000. Also included are all the 1985 remixes of "She Sells Sanctuary".

Love has been one of my favorite albums for twenty + years. As I grew older though, I became less and less impressed with the production levels. This really brings a full sound as it was always meant to be heard. The sound doesn't stop at the album itself either, it is consistent through the singles, and the live set is great too.

If you've ever loved this album, the upgrade is well worth it, one of the few upgrades of this type that really delivers. If you've never heard it, this is an incredible introductory set to the Cult.

Indeed, ever since the massive "garage sale" that was 2000's "Rare Cult" boxset that very much cleaned all the shelves from unreleased and/or hard to find material, Beggars Banquet had been sitting on this one. Bearing in mind that the boxset was a limited edition release, it would only have been fitting for the company to re-release all of the band's albums in expanded format with a second CD of extra goodies. But nooo, instead, Beggars decided to wait until a more "marketable" opportunity arose, and so it did, only 9 years later, just as Ian Astbury announces that "There will be no new album. I don't think we'll ever see a Cult album. Albums are dead." (his words, not mine, look it up on the internet if you don't trust me...) and that the band will launch a tour where they will showcase the "Love" album from start to finish live for the first time ever.

And thus we get "Love Expanded Edition". So obviously, as a consumer and record buyer I'm not too crazy about the opportunistic, blood sucking move from Beggars, but as a Cult diehard, this is a total treat and I can't help but salivate and drool all over it! It comes down to this: if you, like me, are a Cult fan who couldn't get a hold of the boxset, this is a must, period. You need to get this now.

In my humble opinion, "Love" is THE quintessential Cult album. If I were ever forced to choose one and only one album from The Cult to include in my solar powered coconut MP3 player in a desert island, this would be it. Sure, they went on to become rich and famous with other releases (namely "Electric" and "Sonic Temple"), but this, my friends, is The Cult at their most unique and their most inspired.

The Cult "Love" is one of my top 10 albums of all time and for that reason I've purchased all the US editions. When I raced home to pop this in the CD player and after the first few notes of "Nirvana", my ears detected a sonic improvement. This 2 CD set has more bottom end and the highs are crystal clear. Even if you already have "Love" this is worth picking up for the first disc alone. To my ears it sounds like the 2nd disc has also been remastered and is recommended for those that even were fortunate to obtain the "Rare Cult" box set. Personally I don't feel that Beggars Banquet is trying to milk this release. CD Technology has improved even in the last few years and for that reason this is a welcome addition.

For fans of Zeppelin and other "Classic Rock" this is recommended.

Hang your head no more and beg no more! Not only does this Omnibus Edition bring Love in all its beauty - and a lot more powerful and clear - it offers three other essential cds and an incredible, comprehensive book full of insights into the recording period with quotes from everyone involved. It does illumimate some dark corners... Read on, everybody!

Also, being able to listen to the Singles and Demos cds with amazing rare tracks is pure delight, and so is the 1985 concert at the Hammersmith arena where it's possible to feel all the excitement and freshness of this music. Now 25 years after, it's a real 'blast from the past', as Ian puts it when introducing Christians.

The concept behind the box is just perfect, and the mini vinyl replicas are more than adequate. I couldn't have asked for more. This is the Cult at its most adventurous and unique.

I'd say this is the eternal reward for all of us who've waited so patiently for this treasure to be unearthed and released. Love obviously very soon everybody at long last!

I was hesitant to buy this set because the mastering on the last two releases from the cult has been atrocious (Born into This & Beyond Good and Evil). Super loud, brickwalled, clipped, zero dynamic range, heavy digital distortion, fatiguing, are some of the ways I'd describe those two albums. I listened to them once and then sold them. For more info you can google 'loudness war'.

Luckily this set does not suffer from the same terminal problem. It's not an audiophile mastering, but it is a good mastering. There is enough dynamic range so that the music has some punch to it. The drums hits do make an impact, unlike say Beyond Good and Evil where the drums make no impact whatsoever and the distortion is brutal. The bass too sound nice and full on this release, unlike the the last two releases. All in all, the guy at Loud Mastering did a good job (maybe they should rename the mastering house 'not too Loud Mastering).

The packaging is fantastic, I don't think Beggars cut any corners on this one.

So if you're a cult fan, get this before its OPP.
