4.0 out of 5 stars He Looks Like He Should Be In ZZ Top but Sounds Like He Should Be in the Magnetic Fields
I don't normally add a review when there is already four reviews but when I was trying to decide whether or not to but this album those four reviews didn't really help. Every review so far either claims it's album of the year or a horrible mess. Rolling Stone magazine said it was an album "To Buy Now." I'm not a slave to Rolling Stone magazine but sometimes they get it...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not so good...
I'm sure this guy is a nice fellow, but it sounds like he is plugging his nose when he is singing. I find it really annoying.

I don't normally add a review when there is already four reviews but when I was trying to decide whether or not to but this album those four reviews didn't really help. Every review so far either claims it's album of the year or a horrible mess. Rolling Stone magazine said it was an album "To Buy Now." I'm not a slave to Rolling Stone magazine but sometimes they get it right (like they did with Nada Surf's Let Go). So I was set on a task of researching this album and I found it hard to find the truth mixed in these reviews. The truth is it's a good album. It's a strong first outting which is hard to do with a double album. The most comprable artist I can relate Benji Hughes to is the Magnetic Fields. It's somewhat of a stretch but he also reiminds me of Sea Change era Beck with some electronic beats and a little pep. If those comparesons sound good to you, check out this album. It's not album of the year but it's a well crafted strong album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Album of the Year?, July 22, 2008
This review is from: A Love Extreme (Audio CD)
This is a fantastic album worth the price for a double disc. Its a debut artists but watch out for this one cause it could climb the charts. it sounds a lot like Beck with hints of Beatles, Eels, Notwist and even the Kinks. Check out "Tight Tee Shirt" "So Well" and "Vibe So Hot" and you'll get an idea of what I am talking about. There are a lot of slower building songs too. I love this record and would reccomend it to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars So much to love, March 7, 2009
This review is from: A Love Extreme (MP3 Download)
This is a masterpiece, packed with real beautiful beats and lyrical genius. Pop songs that make you feel, dance, groove, laugh, and more. Dark comedy (Why Do These Parties...), laments (Waiting For an Invitation, Love is a Razor), zaniness (The Mummy) and sheer musical genius (Jubalee) make this my favorite record of 2008-2009.

Bits of Leonard Cohen, Harry Nilsson, and 21st century pop, to be sure; but all Benji Hughes, marking this iconoclast as one of the best, and most original going. It would be a shame not to experience this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Have you ever seen him live!!!, October 24, 2009
This review is from: A Love Extreme (MP3 Download)
One of the best live shows I've seen in a while!!! This is a must have album. The whole band is incredible, the lyrics are sick, and the beats are amazing. If you don't listen to Benji Hughes then you don't know music!!!

I've read mixed reviews of his recordings, but overall very entertaining. His live show is a must see. (And speaking of Prince, don't miss his cover of "Purple Rain."

4.0 out of 5 stars A little bit of everything, October 18, 2008

This album was highly recommended by the Rolling Stone magazine. It's a very eclectic album with a little bit of everything so depending on your taste there will always be some good and some bad. But overall this is an interesting album.

5.0 out of 5 stars CURRENT SUPERFAVORITE, November 4, 2009
This review is from: A Love Extreme [Vinyl] (Vinyl)
At first I only really liked a handful of songs on this massive collection. Lately I've given the remaining tracks a chance and have been completely turned around. This man is a god and deserves any and all of the fame he will most likely achieve. Best of luck to him and I hope for many many more albums. LOVE IT!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing and Unique, July 31, 2009

I first heard of this album in an Esquire Magazine. I listened to it and it really stood out from anything I have heard in a long time. It is hard to explain, but it has a modern feel with beat and melody mixed with classic, genuine lyrics that cut through you. I highly recommend this album and am pretty surprised this album hasn't blown up.

4.0 out of 5 stars if you are too serious, you're seriously lost, December 19, 2008
This review is from: A Love Extreme (Audio CD)
this album is fun. even sweet at times. check the artists myspace page if you're worried about dropping loot on the album or not. maybe give "all you gotta do..." a spin or two. maybe take "you stood me up" for a walk. don't get your knickers in a twist, it's fun. fun is okay. back to "all you gotta do...", if that song doesn't make you grin, maybe you should get a brand new face. after you've had your free fun on myspace buy the album. everybody's gotta eat. dairy queen sounds nice at the moment and I don't know why.

ps - stars suck - i would not give zero, one, two, three, four or five stars to any artist album. it's lame and simple. art is not divisible into neat and orderly categories. math and science can be rated art can only be appreciated or not understood or even not appreciated. but to sit on a throne and judge is fake power. andrew carnegie once said "any fool can criticize, condemn and complain... and most fools do." just a thought for high and mighty reviewers who more often than not never create anything outside of the fog they bellow.

happy holidays from one who doesn't participate.
