3.0 out of 5 stars Ah, love.., May 20, 2004

This review is from: Love Fights Volume 1 (Paperback)
Love Fights was my first Andi Watson read, and I was a bit disappointed by the TPB (which collects #1-6 of the comic) after reading all the hype over the single issues. I really enjoyed the artwork - all around, Watson is creative and funny in his renderings. The main story line just never grabbed me. I found the "love fights" leaning on cliche too often, and the story moved forward glacially. I did like Guthrie the cat and his mysterious powers and jealousy, but I wasn't drawn into any of the other characters' situations or personalities. In the story, Watson's theme of male insecurity in a world over-populated with superheroes is well executed, though. He does a great job lampooning this theme via his main male character who is attracted to a strong, intelligent woman.

Overall, I found Love Fights to be graphically strong with a weak story and character interest. Perhaps the story kicks up in later issues? I will be reading and reviewing Watson's Complete Geisha, which I am looking forward to comparing to Love Fights, but Love Fights TPB #1 did not draw me in to continue the series.
