5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating Historical Novel, May 18, 2009
By
This review is from: Love Finds You in Liberty, Indiana (Paperback)
Melanie Dobson's descriptive writing pulled me into Love Finds You in Liberty, Indiana before I turned the first page. I jumped into the heart of Anna Brent, a young Quaker woman, and her inward struggle to follow God's call to love in all circumstances versus obeying the laws that govern her divided country. The suspense is palpable as the courageous heroine chooses to put her life and freedom at risk and run a station on the underground railroad. While she quietly helps runaway slaves escape to freedom, the man who unexpectedly captured her heart stands on the verge of discovering her carefully hidden secret life. Can he be trusted with her secret or will his discovery be the end of her life as she knows it?

Dobson masterfully weaves suspense, history and romance into a page-turning thriller. I found myself re-living the characters lives as I tripped through my daily life and mulling over their dilemma to choose obedience to God above all else. The questions of faith spurred spiritual wrestling and growth in my life. You will not be disappointed.

So I could not put this book down. I read it one night start to finish (it was a late night for me) and had no idea how it was going to end. It is a very intriguing story about the underground railroad, and a great glimpse of what it would have been like to be living in that era. Loved the historical aspect and the example of living your life as a sacrifice for others, standing for what you know is right.
Highly recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent historical fiction!, July 26, 2009
This review is from: Love Finds You in Liberty, Indiana (Paperback)
I would highly recommend this to parents who homeschool their teens. The story is clean and wouldn't make your grandma blush, but it's also jam packed with content that will teach youth to have greater compassion on people in less fortunate situations. It also teaches the value in self-sacrifice and loving God and people enough to sacrifice your own freedom so that others may benefit and experience it as well. I even learned about about the Fugitive Slave Act and how much it negatively affected everyone at the time. It reminded me so much of the Holocaust. And in reality, it was America's Holocaust. The reader can easily see how this issue propelled the country into the Civil War.

Bottom line, this was an awesome story and I totally loved it. While not edgy, it was top notch writing and compelling enough to keep me reading. I cared about the characters...every last one of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic historical thriller, July 1, 2009
This review is from: Love Finds You in Liberty, Indiana (Paperback)
In 1850 Liberty, Indiana Anna Brent and her father are conductors on the Underground Railroad helping runaway slaves escape to freedom. She and her dad know they are breaking the law, but their Quaker beliefs insist on assisting those suppressed.

Newspaper editor Daniel Stanton opposes slavery and says so all the time in his paper with strong opinions. At the same he overtly and she covertly work to end slavery, someone apparently has uncovered Anna's secret work. Her only hope to stay out of jail or perhaps even something much worse rests with Daniel whom she trusts with her heart and soul with her secret and her life.

The setting of escaped slaves and Indiana Quakers as Conductors on the Underground Railroad make for a fantastic historical thriller with the romance well written but intended to support the heroic efforts of those risking their lives especially the lead couple. Anna and Daniel are a wonderful pairing as each faces danger with courage. Fans who relish a profound vivid look back at a period of brave people willing to die for basic human rights will enjoy LOVE FINDS YOU IN LIBERTY, INDIANA.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ooooh So Good, June 14, 2011
This book had me on my toes, completely engaged in each chapter. It brought up parts of America's history that often we like to forget... and asked questions of each of us in what we are willing to do for what we believe in and how to stand in faith when it is not safe or popular or easy. Thanks Melanie for another brilliantly written and inspiring book.

historical novels I have read in a long time. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. It was very apparent that the author had done a lot of research and cared a great deal about the subject matter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read!!, August 14, 2010
This is an excellent story set in 1850, Liberty, Indiana. I had never read a book set around the Underground Railroad, so not only was I entertained by the story, I also learned quite a bit of the history surrounding the Fugitive Slave Act of 1950, abolitionists, and runaway slaves. Melanie Dobson is an incredibly talented writer, and I was drawn into the story from page one. There was a wonderful combination of faith, tension, and romance that kept my interest to the very last page. I look forward to reading more of her books in the future, and I highly recommend this book!

4.0 out of 5 stars nice historical romance set in a real American town!, February 4, 2010
This review is from: Love Finds You in Liberty, Indiana (Paperback)
Love finds you in Liberty, Indiana is a historical romance about Anna Brent, who, along with her dad, operates a station on the underground railroad. In public she occasionally has to speak pro-slavery in order to hide her identity. Daniel Stanton, on the other hand, loudly speaks out against slavery. The two clearly do not get along until they are forced to work together.
I liked this story. The romance was a bit formulaic and the story predictable; however, I enjoyed the history and the speculation involved. The secondary characters were wonderful: Daniel's sister Esther and her husband Joseph, housekeepers Charlotte and Greta, and the heartwrenching tales of the runaways. I was a quick read and well worth my time!
Summerside Press is planning to publish at least one novel per state in this series. There will be historical and contemporary romances all located in real American towns. I think this is a great idea, allowing readers to learn about life around the States.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't remember when......, November 7, 2009

I have read a book I so throughly enjoyed!!! I love well written books from this era and this one was well written and took me into their lives like a book should! I loved the way this author captured the essence of why and how the Underground Railroad worked and how much risk there was involved. It was interesting to me how many secrets were kept even in the same families....

This was an excellent book!!! It was delightful, just a touch of romance with strong characters and great story lines.
