Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Author and speaker Hobbs (Never Say Diet) has a story about dieting that will refute any number of doubting challenges to her plan for getting in shape and staying that way. Hobbs, who lost 200 pounds and has maintained that weight loss by changing the way she approaches food and life, offers anyone struggling with weight problems a different way of handling uncontrollable desires for food. With a friendly, breezy style, Hobbs engages readers first on an emotional level as she tells of her private pain as a morbidly obese woman, then smoothly transitions into helping individuals understand the whys and wherefores of their inner battle with edible comfort. The author's clear message of Christian spirituality will appeal especially to evangelicals, while her hard-fought battle with pounds will resonate with everyone. Hobbs's method is a friendlier, gentler approach to getting fit and fabulous. (Dec.)

Chantel Hobbs has become somewhat of an expert on losing weight and keeping it off. She has two previous books out on the topic of how she managed to lose over two hundred pounds and not only lose it but keep it off. And now in LOVE FOOD & LIVE WELL she shares some advice that she learned from a super thin woman she met at the gym. Moderation.

But that's not all that Chantel teaches us. In a humorous, friendly manner that reminds me of a conversation between friends over coffee, Chantel shows us that food is not the enemy. It is our attitudes toward it that sabotages us. She teaches us when we can have carrot cake and when it is simply time to have a carrot.

You can turn food into an ally by following Chantel's 80/20 rule. 20% of the time spludge on the foods you love. The remaining 80% choose food on the basis of delivering maximum fuel for your body and health. In this way, she teaches us self-discipline.

LOVE FOOD & LIVE WELL includes personal inventories, original recipes, food plans, and detailed exercises. This book is a beneficial guide to anyone who wants to lose weight and keep it off. I read this book once for review, now I plan to go back and study it for my own personal use.

This Mom's Review:

The author, Chantel Hobbs, reminds us that "loving food is not a sin... The problems arise when we take something that's good and allow its pleasure to become so addictive that we stop practicing self-control and regular restraint."

The author provides plenty of motivation and instruction for successfully meeting our weight goals. Within the pages of her book, you'll find:

* The need to give our control over to God - I believe that's why I'm failing in my own efforts -- I'm not allowing God's involvement, nor is His control in my weight loss efforts (and other areas of my life).
* The importance of giving God credit in our successes. - Chantel gives God complete credit for her 200-pound loss.
* How tempting carbs, protein power, and fat play a part in our weight loss efforts, as well as in our overall health.
* How to make meals more meaningful and enjoy those delicious brownies.
* Goal-planning tips - Setting goals that are realistic and doable.
* Stretches and exercises with pictures and step-by-step instructions.

I do recommend this book to anyone seeking to lose weight God's way. Yes, God does care about our physical health. However, keep in mind that he does not want us to obsess over it, as Chantel also points out in her book.

I enjoy everything that Chantel writes regarding dieting, weight-loss, and healthy living. Love Food and Live Well is a great resource for the person that is either just getting started or on solid ground but just wanting extra ammunition against weight gain. The book has a lot of tips and stories, but really tries to make the reader aware that there is a way that food can be viewed that is emotionally healthy, allowing the reader to have success for a lifetime.

I really enjoyed this book! Since I am all about exercising and eating right, this book was right up my alley!
I love the way Chantel Hobbs writes. She doesn't write as an expert who's learned everything there is to know about diet and exercise and talks down to the reader. She writes as one who's "been there and done that." She is humble and candid about her own personal difficulties about food and weight loss. To my delight, she writes as one who is in the trenches with the reader, teaching from what she has learned and is in the trenches with the reader to teach and encourage. In other words, imagine sitting at an intimate table, having coffee or tea with a friend and having a wonderful conversation. That is what her writing style is all about and I really like that!
One of my favorite quotes from the book is "...Living well, while loving food..." She makes the important point all throughout the book that it is not food that is wrong, but our perception of food that is the problem. In addition, the point is made that we should set realistic goals for ourselves and see ourselves as uniquely made by God. We shouldn't try to fit into a mold that God never meant for us to fit into. Another quote I loved is when she said "(I had to) choose to live a life of moderation in a world where excess is encouraged." This is so true! Anyone living in the United States of America can relate to this in some form or fashion, no matter what situation they're in.
I really like the fact that she makes complicated concepts regarding calories, fat, protein and carbohydrates, simple and easy to understand. Some authors go into great detail about these things, thereby making them sound very complicated. For me, that translates into "too much work," and not very important.

I recently received Love Food & Live Well, by Chantel Hobbs, the author of Never Say Diet. I was sent this book for free from the Blogging for Books program through Waterbrook Multnomah Press in return for my honest review.

Are you looking to lose weight? Have you spent years losing and then gaining it back and maybe more? Chantel is with you. She spent most of her adult life trying to lose 200 pounds. She tried everything to do it too. And none of it worked. Until now. She has a "deal" that has kept her 200 pounds off for the last 10 years. And it isn't a magic pill, it isn't 5 hours of exercising each day. In fact, it is probably something you would never have guessed.... She says to stop trying to control your life, and give it to God. It was a surprising solution that I was not expecting.

Through the chapters of Love Food and Live Well, Chantel shows a step by step guide of how she finally put God in control of her life and began to love herself again. Now, you might be thinking, "Well God isn't going to just hit me with lightning and make me thin again..." And you're right! Chantel does share the hard steps that she took to get those 200 pounds off. And she shares what agony she went through after losing the weight as she began to obsess about the weight loss and exercise. But she was able to do with God's help. And she shares what that means and looks like for each one of us.

The first half of the book is geared to getting your heart and soul in the right place to be able to let God in and let you change. She says that this is the most important part of making this "deal" work and keep working. Then she shares her food and exercise tips for getting you started. I love the 80/20 rule. She explains about the different types of food that your body needs.
