Full of Romance and plenty of Intrigue,

This review is from: A Love to Last Forever (The Brides of Gallatin County, Book 2) (Paperback)
Bethany or Beth, rather, is definitely the romantic one of the Gallatin sisters. In book #2 of the series we get to hear her story. As a reader, on could easily understand and appreciate this novel without having read the first book. Yet, the first book is Gwen, the eldest sister's story, and understanding her is easier if you know her background more fully. The only qualm I have with this book is the way that it ended, I have many unanswered questions and feel quite left in my pondering. It is not necessarily bad, and it definitely makes me even more so eager for the third book, where I am sure we will hear Lacy's story, but I do despise be left to wonder. Beth is full about romance and all she wants is her own. Then with the confusion of Mr. Adrian Murphy of the railroad company and neighbor Nicholas Lassiter, she is unsure of what she really wants. Through out the story she dives into her dime romance novels seeking answers. She even finds her way into more novels than in time for reading the Bible and that was a part of her with some guilt that I could easily relate to. This story is definitely not lacking on romance, for Beth as well as for other characters as well. There are pregnancies with babies and losses. There are crimes with passion and purpose. People are coming in and moving out and with each page you never know what to expect next. The world of the Gallatin County Gallatin sisters is changing rapidly and as a reader you will absolutely thirst for what is next. After reading this book, if you missed the first, you'll definitely want to go back as well as look for the third to come later this year (2009).

an okay sequel,
This review is from: A Love to Last Forever (The Brides of Gallatin County, Book 2) (Paperback)
"A Love to Last Forever" is the 2nd book in the Brides of Gallatin County series by Tracie Peterson. I found it to be an okay sequel to the first book.
Beth Gallatin has always wanted someone to love, a home, and family. However because of her father's roaming ways, she found her solace in romance novels. But with the passing of her father, Beth finally has the chance to find what she has always wanted. Nick Lassiter has loved Beth ever since she moved to town. Beth never gave a second glance to Nick since she felt their relationship was more brother-sisterly. However, as days go on, Beth begins to think of Nick in a different light. But the unexpected arrival of someone from Nick's past may threaten the bond that they have... Meh. That's what I have to say about this book. Yes, I enjoyed it and the setting of the story was done well. However, I found most of the characters to be annoying. Lacy is the only character I find remotely interesting. I didn't like Beth complaints about not wanting to move either. Thankfully, that got resolved. However the book then ends rather abrubtly. I know the story will continue in the 3rd book with Lacy's story, but I felt that it was an odd place to stop the book. On the plus side, I found that the mishaps in the book made for a good plot and showed character growth in many of the characters whether it be Beth, Nick, Simon, and even Ellie. Overall, I found the book to be an okay read. I did enjoy it since I love Tracie Peterson and I would reccommend it if you are a fan. I'm just hoping that Lacy's story in "A Dream to Call my Own" is better. Hopefully it is since she is my favorite character. :)

Good Read but nothing really special,
By
This review is from: A Love to Last Forever (The Brides of Gallatin County, Book 2) (Paperback)
This book continues the story of the Gallatin sisters and this book focus on Beth, the sister with the romantic dreams and wishes. She's an avid reader of dime store novels and seeks to find that storybook romance in her real life. Unfortunately for her, it's not as easy as for her to find true love as it is for the heroines in her books. Beth is the type of character I'm not really too fond of in books. I really don't like heroines that can't make up their minds about what they want. It's ok to be have goals and hope to attain them one day, but I despise wishy-washy folks. I did though enjoy reading about Beth's adventures with her sisters. It's nice to read about families that are still close even when they are adults. The historical bits are fun to read, and I still like reading about how they are running the house as a stop for travelers. The romance in this book is very much there although slightly rushed. I thought the wedding in this book came rather abruptly, it seemed like it came out of nowhere. Obviously the signs were all there, but I just thought there would be more build up and growth of a relationship. The biggest thing that really bugged me about the book was the fact that the sisters did the whole laudanum trick again, this time on an entire saloon. I honestly cannot believe that they did not learn from their previous time doing this with their now brother-in-law, that this is very dangerous. It's played off for laughs but I just can't believe that they thought this was a smart idea. To be honest the whole book I felt sorta lackluster while reading it. I enjoyed it, as I always do Tracie's books. It was just that with this book, I felt that everything in the story has been written before in other books. There wasn't really anything that stood out to me to make this one special. Perhaps my problem is that since I've read all of Tracie's books, I can easily spot when a storyline gets reused. For a new fan, this won't be a problem and it is a very enjoyable book. Hopefully the third book in the series will be a little better for me.

Wonderlust? Not Beth.,
This review is from: A Love to Last Forever (The Brides of Gallatin County, Book 2) (Paperback)
A Love to Last Forever by Tracie Peterson
Reviewed by Dawn Ewing Beth Gallatin was not bit by wanderlust as her father was. What she wants is simple, to stay put. She's done roaming the ends of the earth and simply wants to make Gallatin House her lifelong home. She has a secret interest in romance novels that add complications to her life. Which of her suiters is "dying of love for her?" Nick Lassiter is at odds with his emotions. Will he ever succeed in wooing Beth? He struggles for forgiveness. His not so innocent past threatens the slender thread of affection between he and Beth. This book is impossible to put down. The heart of Montana captivates the readers and compels them to imagine life in 1879. Beth her two sisters, the "girls" at Rafe's, and of course the town bachelors make a wonderful cast that quickly enthrall the reader. A Love To Last Forever has romance, adventure, hope and intrigue. The outrageous saloon keeper is not the only wild animal that threatens the lives of Nick and Beth. I enjoyed this book and look forward to the third book in the Brides of Gallatin County series.

Beth Gallatin is happy as long as she is settled down in one town, with her family, and hopefully marry and raise a family of her own. Her dime novels feed her fantasy, but she isn't certain how to know what love is. After all, she has feelings for neighbor Nick Lassiter as well as railroad scout Adrian Murphy. But when Adrian asks Beth to wait for him while he goes to report his findings about land to the train company he's representing, Beth hesitates. They aren't engaged. They barely know each other. Why should she put her life on hold when she isn't sure. Nick has had feelings for Beth since they moved to town, but he believes she is going to marry Adrian. He tries to avoid Beth, but that doesn't work. And just when he hopes that she might find him to be more than a friend, Nick's past catches up with him. Will this ruin his chances forever? I read the first book in this series when it first came out and wanted to read this one to see what would happen. There is plenty of page turning drama in this book, with Rafe's house right next door to the stage stop. And the Gallatin girls are good for both a laugh and stirring up trouble. The characters are realistically developed, and the setting is well described. Sometimes I felt the conversations were a bit stilted, but not all the way through the book. While A LOVE TO LAST FOREVER did start a little bit slow, it didn't continue that way, and I had to keep reading to find out what happened next.

Beth's story was the book that left, both, myself and my daughter (who is 30 something) actually wanting more and looking very forward to reading the 3rd and final book. She struggles thoughout much of the book trying to decide who she wants to fall in love with whether it is Nick who has been in her life for many years or Adrian, who is new. Definitely, the reader throughout the story is pulling for Nick and is pleased with her choice ... she is also struggling with the many moves her father has had them do throughout their lives and the fear of future moves that will continue to plague her through out the 3rd book in the series. This book also deals with the fact that she at first is searching in Dime Store novels for the answers to her questions when the answers of course, are to be found in the Bible. It is a good book, in fact a very good book but not a fabulous book ... is it a book I would read again ... a series I would read again .. Yes ... both I and my daughter (even with our 25 year age span) enjoyed them all and would definitely recommend them all! Read this and then go on to Lacy's story in the final Book Three!

Romantic Montana Frontier Life and Sisterhood,
By
This review is from: A Love to Last Forever (The Brides of Gallatin County, Book 2) (Paperback)
Set in the 1870's, the Brides of Gallatin County series focuses on three sisters: Gwen, Beth, and Lacy. Together the sisters run Gallatin House, a roadhouse where they board and feed the stage coach passengers traveling through the Montana frontier. Book #2, "A Love to Last Forever" tells twenty-two year old Beth's story, focusing on her struggles with finding the right suitor and her fight to overcome a guilty conscience after her father's unfortunate death. Her supportive sisters and a strong faith in God help her through the hardships and uncertainties she faces.
I immediately liked Beth's character. She's a book lover, particularly dime romance novels and a hopeless romantic waiting for someone to sweep her off her feet. She also likes to scheme and her actions get her into trouble from time to time. Her main interests lie in the mysterious, hardworking Nick Lassiter and the suave Adrian Murphy, a railroad surveyor. Because her father made the family move so often during her childhood, the thing she wants most is to have a permanent home, someplace to set roots. Of all the sisters, I'm probably the most like Beth. Even though I read book #2 before book #1 of the series (Gwen's "A Promise to Believe In"), I didn't have much difficulty in understanding the plot. Peterson adequately fills in the main story lines so her books can be read out of order. Book #2 contains more drama, violence, suffering and losses than the previous book. I myself could have done without some of the violent scenes, though I suppose Peterson was trying to capture the spirit of the untamed west. I'm looking forward to finishing off the trilogy when book #3 "A Dream to Call My Own" releases in June.

Great read!,

Anyone who has a sister (or more than one) probably understands the reality that there are days you want to string' em up. . .but let anyone else try to mess with them, and you'll quickly close ranks in unwavering solidarity, sometimes much to the aggravation of the sister being "protected"! Such is the case of Gwen, Beth, and Lacy. Their antics in the first book to safeguard Gwen made me chuckle. Now Beth must contend with her sisters and the confusing attentions of Nick, whose behavior is nothing at all like the romance novels she devours. Will she ever find a man like the ones that reside on the pages of the books?
Tracie Peterson has penned another great story. However, as enjoyable as it is simply as a relaxing read, there are also great truths woven throughout. Such as standing up for what's right, taking time to know and love a person in spite of their cicumstances, and learning that true love is so much more than gallant deeds and poetic words. |
