This is beautiful, sensitively written book with wonderful illustrations. I bought two for gifts (one to the local library).

This tender story with its beautiful illustrations is the story of Little Owl and the loss of her beloved Grandfather. Finding it hard to understand and cope with such a huge part of her heart gone, her family gathers around her and tries to explain the reality of a death of a loved one. In so doing, the wise owl family also imparts wisdom and truth to the reader who may be going through a similar scenario in his life. In her grief, Little Owl learns a tender lesson of personal loss and how that bond of love can carry on through happy memories, fun activities and family traditions that were shared together in their lives.

The author, with compassion and insight, explains in words that a child will understand, her unbearable loss: love is wider than the mountains, deeper than the sea, brighter than the brightest light.

The illustrations are soft and warm and as you engage in them you feel like you are being hugged. They enhance the text and the message of the book perfectly. They are bittersweet as they paint a picture of not only the deep sorrow of losing someone but also the jubilant joy in remembering the good times that were shared.

A wonderful add-on at the end of book is where the author shares advice from professionals on how to cope with a grief and how a child might react in such a situation. She shares websites and books that would be helpful and healing for such a time. Although the subject is one that most families do not want to face, necessity may take them there. This book will be very beneficial as it will give insight as to how to work through such a painful time and bring hope, as Little Owl (and the reader) discover that that special person, who is now no more with them on this earth, will live on in their hearts forever.

The author has shared an important resource on a subject most families hope to avoid, but unfortunately, most of them will face. Loss of a loved one is difficult at any age, but particularly for a child.

In this beautifully illustrated hard cover book, Rislov tells the story of Little Owl who has recently lost her grandfather. Together with Mama, Papa, and Baby Brother Owl, she must face the reality of his death. I like the choice of animals in this story. The owl is associated with wisdom; the family imparts its advice to the reader. Other animals like the dragonfly, butterfly and snail remind one of gentleness, delicacy and tenderness. Little Owl learns that the comfort of family and friends reminds us that love is all around us. When one dies, his spirit survives eternally in the memories of shared activities and the traditions that loved one has passed on to us. The author uses analogies that will be understood by children: love is wider than the mountains, deeper than the sea, brighter than the brightest light. That love from a deceased loved one lives on in our laughter; and like a garden that grows when given care, it will grow stronger within us as time goes on.

The text in the book is not extensive so that very young children will understand with a minimal amount of adult explanation. Those exquisite illustrations are soft, warm and tender enhancing the message. They portray both the sadness of loss and the joy of remembering shared activities like fishing and flying kites. Grandfather is shown in the background watching the family.

Finally, the author shares the advice of a pediatrician, minister and social worker on how to deal with and handle the kinds of questions and reactions children might express following the death of a loved one.

Love is Forever is a children's storybook narrated by a wise owl to his grandchild. It is a tender, sweet story of the gift of love that lives on, even after the grandfather's life has ended. This book is written like a love-letter from beyond the grave. Love is Forever offers comfort, hope and inspiration to those who have lost, or are facing the loss of, someone very dear.

Author Casey Rislov gets right to the core of grief, gently nudging young reader's hearts as she nurtures their aching souls. Illustrations by Rachael Balsaitis merge beautifully with the message penned in this book that will touch readers of all ages.

Love is Forever comes highly recommended for home and school libraries and for use in clinical settings for grief counseling. An appendix provides expert advice on helping children through the grieving process.

Casey Rislov, that charming, warm Wyoming writer, has joined with illustrator Rachel Balsaitis in create a book that explains love in all its permutations, the immeasurable importance of love and the transcendence of love - even after death. Books such as this are so very important to share with children - and even adults - who are facing the passing of a loved one and must deal with the sad feelings and the questions of why, and find support that whatever the feelings are that arise with a loved one's death they are natural. This book explains how to hold on to that love that won't ever be gone.

In this particular book Casey Rislov has chosen a family of owls to make more universal the thoughts she phrases so beautifully. The love word is applied to the beauties of nature and that invisible quality of light and lightness that surrounds us, even when someone we love passes into the next life. Grandfather owl dies and the owl family comforts the grandchild with reassurance that the love of the grandfather will continue to be present always. `Wherever you walk, I will walk, too. Because my love will live forever in you.'

If every family could place this book in every household, then the inevitable trauma of losing a loved won will be less painful because of the thoughts Casey Rislov has shared. So many good things to say about this book, but it needs to be read by everyone. Incidentally, at the end of the book are contributions from experts who discuss the manner in which children can be aided at the time of death. Their thoughts are helpful, but not as inspiring as those of Casey Rizlov so beautifully realized by the images of Rachel Balsaitis. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, January 14
