Editorial Reviews

New Orleans-born Laverne Butler's voice exudes an established confidence and impeccable taste. Eschewing scatological pyrotechnics, she relies instead on nuances, caressing syllables and imbuing all sorts of speculative meaning into rests in a most sensuous, though never sensationalistic, way. With her accompanist-Music Director Bruce Barth, LaVerne turns her attentions to a group of standards and jazz tunes that highlight not just her sexy ribbon of a voice, but which also give her accompanying quartet plenty of space to show their wares.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not her best (IMO) January 22, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Laverne Butler's newest offering is certainly enjoyable but not as definitively [read strikingly] sung nor quite as nice a selection of songs I think as her earlier "Those Foolish Things" (very good). It all seems a bit "same and easy". She really has a great voice, along the lines of say Diane Reeves or Sarah Vaghan-ish, and a modern touch to her arrangements. Somehow, while highly anticipated, this album of her's doesn't get as many rotations as the earlier one these last few months...(I am looking forward to hearing her older "No Looking Back"). She is very much a leading young jazz vocal and I like her classical vocal sound.

PS Feb 2014: "No Looking Back" is a great sounding standards album!
