Pop in the best sense of the word,
By
This review is from: Love the Future (Audio CD)
I usually listen to a lot of rock, but I happened across Chester French last year, and I thought the songs on their myspace were great.
This album definitely does not disappoint at all. I don't liek the pop on the radio, but this music is pop like The Beatles and The Beach Boys. It is beautifully crafted. D.A. and Max put a lot of thought into what instruments and sounds to use, and it all comes together well. I also like the hip-hop influence and how adventurous the songs can, along with how extrememly catchy they are. I can' stop humming Neal and Not Over You.

I came across Chester French in the magazine Nylon. (Peaches Geldof, one of Nylon's contributors, is Max Drummey's ex-wife and could be the "peach" that he slyly references as being "hung up again on a peach" in track 11 Not Over You) I assumed that they would be a litle too precocious, too cheeky monkey, a little too death by irony. (It should be noted that my ideas of what's good in music are old enough to buy their own liquor.) But I downloaded their free song "She Loves Everybody" off of Amazon and was surprised that I really liked it. I took a chance on their full length debut and found it equally great- it's original and fresh. I like how they use electronica elements in some songs, early Beatles stylings (as other reviewers have mentioned) in a couple tracks, and more "traditional" sounds such as a Latin beat in their introduction and a country feel in my personal favorite, Beneath the Veil, trk 9. Take it for a spin, you may be as surprised and delighted as I was.

Not Impressed,

In listening to this album, I was taken not only by its a lack of originality, but more significantly, its lack of heart. Hailing from Harvard, the story behind this duo may make for a good headline, but this media ploy may prove detrimental as their music does not reflect well on that institution's intellectual integrity. What you hear in these 13 songs is not artistic ingenuity but a forced amalgam of brash sounds that neither please nor inspire. The lyrics settle for easy rhymes that have been recycled in countless form, as in "don't want to be your man, just want to hold your hand, but I don't think you understand." These songs are not crafted to pull one's emotions or even to engage the imagination; rather, they offer a short ride that is as quick as it is disposable. In the end, this effort is a collection of songs that are slick, incohesive and, ultimately, irrelevant.

I don't usually review much music because it all sounds the same but this one hits it out of the park with a nice mix of pop with various different influences. Its the type of music that you want to listen to with your windows down, in your car, during the Summer.

I've never felt the need to try and convince people to listen to something that I enjoy. With that said, these guys are amazingly talented and their album will warrant the top spot in you disc changer (if anyone still has one of those). I've been listening to them since the beginning of last year and anxiously awaited a full lenght LP. The time was well worth it as I believe they delivered one of the most complete musical experiences in years. Their lyrics and musical arrangements are great but more importantly smart. It feels as if they argued over how everything should sound. I say that because it sounds as perfect as an album not made by The Beatles can be. Buy this album with the confidence of knowing you'll own an important piece of pop work.

There's nothing quite like when music surprises you. That's what this album does. The musical references to Buddy Holly, Beach Boys, Beatles, Prince and more are everywhere. It may seem to some as just a pop album, which it is but it pays homage to their roots. The LP version is 180 grams, sounds great and includes a coupon to download an MP3 version of the album free. Vinyl lovers won't regret their purchase and the free MP3's should seal the deal. Will everyone love this album? No, but if you want an album to surprise you song after song, give "Love The Future" a spin.

Euphony- "music: any agreeable (pleasing and harmonious) sounds..."
This album is definately the defination of euphony. Chester French's 'Love The Future' album is excellent. If you like anything from The Beatles to N*E*R*D, this album is definately for you! My Top 3 Songs (on this album): 1. Not Over You 2. Fingers 3. Jimmy Choos

This is a well-crafted album & I am surprised by the creativity of Chester French. There is almost a spanish influence with the classical guitar on some of the tracks & though the strings are Beatlesque, the lyrics are simple & easy to follow. The album is dominated by the 3 tracks: Jimmy Choos, Beneath the Veil & She Loves Everybody, but for the most part, they are only the structure & the entire album is needed to get the "idea" or even the flow of what this album really indicates. It can be compared to a few other modern pop acts of "the future" or those who will be around in a few years, but as long as Chester French continues to evolve, the spark shown here on this album is indicative of them being around in the future, & hopefully, luck will make them the frontrunners. As far as creativity, this album is a wonderful display of it.
