Editorial Reviews

Dommin is the sound of the brokenhearted, explains Kristofer Dommin, frontman for the Los Angeles quartet that puts a very fresh spin on a very familiar pain. Dommin are inviting everyone to join them in the dark introspection that goes hand in hand with heartbreak. On their Roadrunner Records debut, Love Is Gone, Dommin delves into complex relationships, damaged psyches and much more. The origins of Dommin can be traced back to 2000, when Kristofer formed the band in San Dimas, just outside of Los Angeles. He added Billy James to the fold as keyboardist two years later and the band s line-up began to take shape as James eventually switched to bass when the pair found Konstantine in 2006. Dommin s vision was becoming fully realized. By this time, Kristofer had already written many of the songs that would comprise Love Is Gone. The last ingredient in Dommin s sonic stew came in the form of drummer Cameron Morris, who joined in 2007. Welcome to the end of love and the beginning of Dommin.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing album, February 12, 2010
This review is from: Love Is Gone (Audio CD)
Kristofer is the John Dowland of his generation. Melancholy has a long tradition in Western music and literature, starting with religious music in the Middle Ages, up through the "Dies irae", to 15th and 16th century Castilian poetry, and in the music of 16th and 17th century England, where John Dowland was a very popular musician. His motto "Semper Dowland, semper dolens" was a reflection on the popularity of melancholy in Elizabethan England. Fast forward to the Romantics, especially Keats, and up to the blues of the 20th century. Rock was born and has transformed and evolved in subtle ways over the past decades. It's nice to see music that takes from this tradition of melancholy and presents a complex reflection on life.

I saw them live when they opened for Lacuna Coil. They were the first of three opening bands, and from the very first chord I was totally blown away by how good they are. I had never heard of them before, but I started following them and bought the cd when it came out a few days ago. They sound fantastic live, especially the vocals. The album is solid, and most of the tracks are really very good. I tend to have music ADD and skip around from Mozart one minute to Arch Enemy the next, but this is one cd I really liked listening to all the way through. I think this band needs way more exposure because all of the members are really talented.

I've shown a few of my friends the album and they were blown away. This music can be described as "goth rock", I suppose, but it doesn't have the goth sound to me. Sirenia and other goth bands have a very different sound that I would classify as goth. This band is really more of an updated classic rock with some elements of goth rock, but more than anything I think they have a lot of metal influence. Probably the most goth thing about them is that they wear black and throw roses to the audience during the concert. The music is melodic and easy to listen to. Their single "My heart, your hands" has three different music videos. This is the latest one: [...]. If there's anything goth about them I think it would be the look. It's kind of a throwback to 1950s with the leather.

The lyrics are somewhat dark but more than anything they're melancholy and explore the painful side of love and relationships. I don't find them to be angsty at all; if anything they're a mature expression of the painful side of love, which I suppose makes them somewhat dark.

Kristofer can sing. And I mean really sing. He has a very unique voice that totally sets the tone of the music and creates a mood that goes hand in hand with the lyrics. If you have the chance, do not hesitate to see them live.

In short: Buy this album and support the band so they'll continue to make good music!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Album, April 27, 2010
By
This review is from: Love Is Gone (Audio CD)
I saw this band perform last night with H.I.M. To sum it up in one word, They were AMAZING. I had only heard of them in interviews with Lacuna Coil where they talked about touring with them, but they definitely have another fan now. I was very sad that I couldn't buy their CD at the concert and have it signed (I had other items signed anyways, and they are very nice, sincere people), but I knew that I had to get it when I got home. Their album is one of the best I've heard in a long time. I really recommend looking them up, buying their album if you like the genre, and seeing them in concert, you won't regret it.
