Amazing album,
This review is from: Love Is Gone (Audio CD)
Kristofer is the John Dowland of his generation. Melancholy has a long tradition in Western music and literature, starting with religious music in the Middle Ages, up through the "Dies irae", to 15th and 16th century Castilian poetry, and in the music of 16th and 17th century England, where John Dowland was a very popular musician. His motto "Semper Dowland, semper dolens" was a reflection on the popularity of melancholy in Elizabethan England. Fast forward to the Romantics, especially Keats, and up to the blues of the 20th century. Rock was born and has transformed and evolved in subtle ways over the past decades. It's nice to see music that takes from this tradition of melancholy and presents a complex reflection on life.
I saw them live when they opened for Lacuna Coil. They were the first of three opening bands, and from the very first chord I was totally blown away by how good they are. I had never heard of them before, but I started following them and bought the cd when it came out a few days ago. They sound fantastic live, especially the vocals. The album is solid, and most of the tracks are really very good. I tend to have music ADD and skip around from Mozart one minute to Arch Enemy the next, but this is one cd I really liked listening to all the way through. I think this band needs way more exposure because all of the members are really talented. I've shown a few of my friends the album and they were blown away. This music can be described as "goth rock", I suppose, but it doesn't have the goth sound to me. Sirenia and other goth bands have a very different sound that I would classify as goth. This band is really more of an updated classic rock with some elements of goth rock, but more than anything I think they have a lot of metal influence. Probably the most goth thing about them is that they wear black and throw roses to the audience during the concert. The music is melodic and easy to listen to. Their single "My heart, your hands" has three different music videos. This is the latest one: [...]. If there's anything goth about them I think it would be the look. It's kind of a throwback to 1950s with the leather. The lyrics are somewhat dark but more than anything they're melancholy and explore the painful side of love and relationships. I don't find them to be angsty at all; if anything they're a mature expression of the painful side of love, which I suppose makes them somewhat dark. Kristofer can sing. And I mean really sing. He has a very unique voice that totally sets the tone of the music and creates a mood that goes hand in hand with the lyrics. If you have the chance, do not hesitate to see them live. In short: Buy this album and support the band so they'll continue to make good music!

I saw this band perform last night with H.I.M. To sum it up in one word, They were AMAZING. I had only heard of them in interviews with Lacuna Coil where they talked about touring with them, but they definitely have another fan now. I was very sad that I couldn't buy their CD at the concert and have it signed (I had other items signed anyways, and they are very nice, sincere people), but I knew that I had to get it when I got home. Their album is one of the best I've heard in a long time. I really recommend looking them up, buying their album if you like the genre, and seeing them in concert, you won't regret it.

This band should be HUGE,

If I had to label the music Dommin makes, mostly I'd say it's gothic-pop-rock. Somewhere between Type O Negative and AFI is where this band finds its groove. Their sound is immediately recognizable and addictive. It's hard to imagine how so many people continue to overlook them. But I'm sure they'll catch on if they just keep making music like this. Love Is Gone is an astounding release that begs to be heard. Also try to find the "Mend Your Misery" album if you enjoy this one (I think it's still for sale on iTunes). A number of the songs from Love Is Gone were re-recorded versions of those found on Mend Your Misery. And the originals rival the new recordings in more ways than one. So check both albums out. For this band is definitely making stellar music that is not to be missed!

I never heard of Dommin until I went to a HIM show. Well, this band blew away every single band playing that night, and yes, including HIM. My boyfriend immediately went out and bought the album - and we've been listening to them constantly since, for months. I can play this album over and over again and not get sick of it, it's that good, and that is coming from someone extremely picky about music. There are only a select number of albums where the ENTIRE album is amazing, and to me, this is definitely one of them. It's also perfect driving music!
It's hard to describe Kristoper's voice, but after deep contemplation (pathetic, I know) I liken it too a milkshake. Yes, a milkshake. Creamy, cool, and smooth. He has a vintage sound to his voice too. Almost every song seems like a nostalgic memory, as if I've heard the song before but never able to grasp where - it's more of a deja vu atmospheric mood feeling, if that makes any sense. The drummer is phenominal and the gothic organ/bells is what puts the music into a whole different dimension. I hope the writing continues and we have this band around for a long time...and hopefully they don't go mainstream because that would disinegrate the importance of what makes them special. I plan on following them for as long as they can create beautiful haunting music as this first album.

I actually came across this band while checking out another band I like. Dommin got a better live show review than the band I was searching for so decided to give them a listen. I am SO GLAD I did, Dommin is very refreshing and unique. I have not been this passionate about a band in years. Every song has the same hard rock sound yet is very different, I like that because too many bands nowadays has one sound, I can tell a Nickelback or Danzig song before they even start to sing. Dommin is the best thing since sliced bread!

"Great Dark Rock Album!",

My Heart, Your Hands---"I can feel the knife carving, your love in my heart" the first line of Your Heart, My Hands draws you into the dark rock, soulful sounds of this album. Kris Dommin perfectly emotes all the deep and sad feelings of breaking up and loss we all have felt before. One of the best songs on this album.
New---Love this fun song, so cool and it makes you want to either bop your head or shake your ass. The kind of song you can see yourself strutting down the boulevard to. Or maybe some music to give you the courage to help you break up with someone... Evenfall Hallow---Short and sweet, the sound that ties in melodies. Tonight---"Are you ready to start the night?" Well, are you? I feel like Kris is ready to consume me with this song. Love is Gone---Soooo Rock'n'roll. Makes me want to learn how to play the drums!!! Seductive vocals, Deep music, very large and dramatic sounds. Dark Holiday---This is one of my favorites. Insane carnival, Psycho Clowns in black makeup, Rock Funeral Pyre music if you can imagine. I've never heard this sound ANYWHERE ELSE!!!! Love it!!!! If you are going to purchase one or two songs from this band this one should be on your list. Without End---LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!!!! "I am a stranger staring... at you and what your wearing... may I undress you with my eyes?" Voice reminds me of a Dark rockish cool gothic elvis. Within Reach---Another instrumental that ties in this album. Only about 1:15 long. Closure---Everyone needs closure. Great lyrics!!! "I'm leaving it all behind, I'm clearing you out of my mind" Dramatic sweeping rock sounds. Making the Most---Piano intro, drums, guitar, slow easy listening song. One Feeling---Fun song, eighties vibe. I Still Lost---OOOOHHHH!!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS ONE TO!!! Slow love song, long intro to one of my NOW favorite songs. One Eye Open---Short song, about a min long, his voice sounds like the wind... Honestly---Reminds me of music from the future, but also the past at the same time which is hard to describe. Remember---WOW!!!!!!!!How beautiful is this song????? So delicate and lovely if a song can be. So simple yet divine.

Great Rock Album!,

I know Dommin is being labeled as goth, but make no mistake about it, Love is Gone is a great rock album. I Still Lost and Remember stick out as two of my favorite tracks. The entire album flows together perfectly like albums use to do before the days of single song downloads. Do yourself a favor and get this album and experience it for yourself.

Not Quite Mind-Boggling, But Still Fun...,
By Jayson Berray (Portland, OR) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Love Is Gone (Audio CD)
Upon first listen of Dommin's "Love Is Gone", stylistically, I was immediately put in mind of the band HIM. I was just walking past Portland's Roseland Theater the other day and noticed a large line outside the door. My interest was piqued as to who was playing so I checked the marquee and as it turns out, it was HIM. What makes this story odd is the fact that I just found out that HIM's opening act for this tour ([...]) is none other than, you guessed it, Dommin.
What a crazy world we live in. The group is named after lead singer Kristofer Dommin--whose hairstyle makes him look like a Mistfits' misfit--and they're one of Roadrunner Records' latest up and coming acts. They're a gothic rock outfit from southern California--a place you might not initially guess, but given Dommin's sometimes glamorous sound it ultimately makes sense. "Love Is Gone" is the group's major label debut album and I have to be honest, there are elements of it that are hard to take seriously. However, I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy the experience. Track with me for a second. I'm a huge fan of horror movies. This album puts me in mind of a good horror movie experience. It almost seems as though it could be the soundtrack to some sort of horror rock opera reminiscent of "Repo! The Genetic Opera" or else something like "The Crow". Also--I'm going über horror nerd here--there is a sound effect present at the beginning of the song "New" (around the 0:08 mark) that was present in the 2003 remake of "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and countless other horror movie trailers that I've seen since. If you're a hardcore horror fan then you'll know exactly which sound effect I'm talking about. As far as specifics of things that are hard to take seriously I'm speaking about things like the grammatical error of the song title "I Still Lost" or Dommin's vocals on the album's closing track "Remember" (more on that later). But again, that doesn't mean that these things don't make the experience fun. For the most part the tracks on this album blur together in a barrage of goth-pop bliss, which can be great--if you're into that sort of thing... Even though it's the shortest track on the album and meant as an interlude, I found myself enjoying the song "Evanfall Hollow". I can be a sucker for haunting and melancholy songs. It provides a great transition into the following song "Tonight"--which I think might have something to do with vampirism. Imagine that. I do enjoy a good implementation of electronica, so the song "Honestly" stood out for me as a worthwhile song on this album. Other than that, "Within Reach" proves to be another great interlude between songs, which also implements a sort of industrial feel. Lastly, I rather enjoyed the song "Closure", which is about as hard rocking as this album gets. It's definitely a fist-pumper. The only direct and specific complaint I found myself having after listening to this album is the length of the closing track "Remember". I feel like this is an example of a song that could have been trimmed down to about three minutes rather than the actual 5:03 that it clocks in at. Dommin chants over and over again throughout the song, "Do you remember...?" My answer is, "No Kris, I don't. Cause the length of this repetitive song has made me forget." From time to time it can be fun to embrace one's dark side. Overall this album is an entertaining listen but a word of warning: if you take it too seriously you may just find yourself feeling like there's no hope left in life. Especially if you're like me and live in a rainy city like Portland while you're listening to it. But I guess every person needs some sort of music to identify with so if this music provides that outlet for some people, then so be it. In closing I'd just like to say come on Kris, things really can't be that bad. After all, you're touring with HIM... |
