5.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting. . ., September 9, 2009
This review is from: Love Has a Face: Mascara, a Machete and One Woman's Miraculous Journey with Jesus in Sudan (Paperback)
This book was truly a blessing to me. I have a soft spot in my heart for overseas missions and this book has given me a glimpse into the challenges and the abundant blessings and miracles that Michele Perry has been a part of the last few years. From working in the slums of India, to the bush of Sudan with war orphans, Michele learns that love does conquer all as you will witness. I enjoyed reading the book as it made me feel like I was chatting with Michele and learning of her real life adventures first hand. Michele has been learning her lessons in love from the people she serves and from Jesus himself! Miracles reminiscent of Biblical days in this book moved me to tears, and to cheers as well! Iris Ministries, Inc. is truly blessed to have her working with them. I appreciated the inclusion of several websites, including Iris Ministries and Michele's blog. Love does have a face as you will discover when you journey through this book! I hope you enjoy it and are blessed by it as much as I was!

5.0 out of 5 stars beautiful, September 10, 2009
This review is from: Love Has a Face: Mascara, a Machete and One Woman's Miraculous Journey with Jesus in Sudan (Paperback)
Love Has A Face is a beautiful memoir! I adored Perry's conversational writing style. I was drawn in to the story immediately by her descriptions of the place and people she worked with. The author's passion is evident in the pages. It is well written and definitely inspirational. This book brought tears to my eyes and made me want to scoop up those beautiful Sudanese babies in my arms and bring them home with me. This is a wonderfully powerful book with an amazing message.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seeing Jesus, January 11, 2010
This review is from: Love Has a Face: Mascara, a Machete and One Woman's Miraculous Journey with Jesus in Sudan (Paperback)
I was so struck by the message of this book that I bought additional copies to give away. But I don't recommend this book for any Christian unwilling to have their comfortable walk with God shaken to the core. If you can read this book and not be convicted on any level by what you have or haven't done to bless Jesus as He has blessed you, then we must be reading different Bibles.

I say that because this author documents her own significant physical disabilities and lack of resources as if they are barely an inconvenience in the scheme of God's will and relies completely on His mercy, grace and love in the middle of a war ravaged, disease infected, famine ridden country to reach out and serve His children. Any excuses the reader may have for surrendering his/herself and resources back to God for His glory should be completely undermined after reading this. The efforts of the author are reflective of Matthew 25:31-46 "I was hungry and you fed me, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, naked and you clothed me, sick and you cared for me, a stranger and you welcomed me in, in prison and you visited me..." As Jesus said, "Inasmuch as you have done this for the least of my brethren, you have done it unto me." That settles it for me, what is done for them is done unto Him. I believe Michele Perry sees Jesus every single day in the faces of those she loves and serves.

So after reading this book, be prepared to ask yourself, "In whose face do I see Jesus today?" If an answer doesn't come to mind readily, look for the least of His brethren in need. Love does indeed have a face - it is His.

5.0 out of 5 stars challenging, October 21, 2009
This review is from: Love Has a Face: Mascara, a Machete and One Woman's Miraculous Journey with Jesus in Sudan (Paperback)
Giving up everything she worked for, the author of Love Has A Face writes about the challenges she faced doing the will of God. Michele Perry, born without her left hip and leg, leaves the comfortable life to show love and care to one hundred little lives in a war zone. The stories she recalls are heart wrenching and seem almost impossible to deal with. In world where love is so scares that it's hard to even imagine it, Michele Perry portrays the love of Christ so vividly, she shows hundreds of people what Christ is like by giving them love. Showing you how important love is to the people in your life and challenging you to apply it.

She does this not knowing from day to day if she or those around her will survive the bombs and machine gun that pelt against the wall of her orphanage every night. She puts her faith in God and it's her incredible faith in God that challenges you to look at your own life searching for something better and more meaningful. I would recommend this book to anyone who is searching for true fulfilment and the true meaning of what it means living for Jesus. It is not a fast read (at least wasn't for me) but it worth your time.

Challenges your heart and your faith. It will also inspire you. My favorite quote from the book is "One thing I have learned in praying for healing is that when a person experiences progress of any kind, thank Jesus for what He is doing and keep praying!" This is inspiring me to want to step out and pray for others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love Has A Face, October 15, 2009
This review is from: Love Has a Face: Mascara, a Machete and One Woman's Miraculous Journey with Jesus in Sudan (Paperback)
When I first started reading this book I thought it was just another interesting missionary story telling about a missionary's experiences on the mission field in Africa. But as I read the book I realized it was much more. If you take the message of this book to heart, it will change the way you look at missions, but, more importantly, it will change the way you live your life. Michele Perry is a missionary in Sudan. She doesn't live an enviable lifestyle there either. The conditions she has faced are beyond our worst nightmares. The lives Jesus has changed with her as His instrument is beyond our greatest dreams and aspirations. I challenge everyone to read this book. You will be profoundly glad you did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love Really Does Have a Face!, September 17, 2009

I was blown away by this book.
Many Christian writers seem to be writing for their own benefit to let the reader know "wow I am really a great Christian!Look at what all I have done!"
Michelle Perry is humility personified! Rarely does she point to herself. She leads us straight to Jesus for us to encounter for ourselves the Mighty Lord she loves and serves.
I can hardly recommend this book more highly ; in fact, I have read it slowly ,as part of my own Daily Quiet Time...I have been enriched and touched in my deepest place. I want everyone I know to have a chance to experience Him in a new way , walking into one of the darkest places on earth with one of His Brightest lights, Michelle Perry.
Read this book, share it with others and rejoice that there are people in this day and time who truly follow the Father's call on their life!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Challenging Call to Love, September 17, 2009
This review is from: Love Has a Face: Mascara, a Machete and One Woman's Miraculous Journey with Jesus in Sudan (Paperback)
This is an AMAZING book! Once in a while, a book enters your life that shakes and challenges you, and will even change you if you let it. This is one of those books. One single, white, one-legged woman answers God's call to go to Sudan and serve with love. She does so with an enormous amount of faith, carrying a message of hope and God's love to a people who've known nothing but war, tragedy and pain. Many years ago, her everyday prayer became, Jesus, let me love with Your love, and see with Your eyes. And that is exactly what she does.

Her journey could not be accomplished without an exceedingly deep relationship with, intense love for, and unshakeable faith in Jesus. Like many missionaries, she has had personal experience with miracles many of us (especially in the Western world) simply never even consider. She has had numerous personal visitations from Jesus, and while it may be easy to discount the authenticity of these experiences, it is also easy to see how she could not do what she does without the authority and strength of Jesus being anointing her to do so. She has shown many that hate, evil and darkness cannot stand up against true, pure love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Watching Michele walk her dream out, September 6, 2009
This review is from: Love Has a Face: Mascara, a Machete and One Woman's Miraculous Journey with Jesus in Sudan (Paperback)
Michele is one who loves to hear God speak with her....She is so aware that He did not just create and abandon... He loves to talk and show us good things.... She so knows that He wants us to be the solution of goodness!

If you read her book with open heart - and courage to test God... you will see that He will not fail you!!!

Three years later, after that airport and plane ride rendezvous with this woman...I have stayed in touch with her and amazed at the LOVE and FAITHFUL LOYAL heart of God - these kids and Michele's daily provision and answer!!!

They are growing in the reality of their destinies! Potential in leadership and dreams fulfilled!!!

This is the real deal...

She is so intelligently saavy. You will see that a good author and mentor will not give you the answers but will lead you in the direction where you will notice that we can have a lot of questions answered as we journey into the heart of helping those in need....

not for our own gain, but for their success!!

You will love her book!!!

warmly,
priscilla

5.0 out of 5 stars clarifications, September 8, 2009
This review is from: Love Has a Face: Mascara, a Machete and One Woman's Miraculous Journey with Jesus in Sudan (Paperback)
Love Has A Face is not a traditional missionary bio nor was it written with that intention. The author's clarification on her amazon author page was very helpful in understanding the context and intent of the book. Here are a few brief excerpts below- but I would seriously suggest anyone purchasing this book also read her statement in its entirety. It is insightful as to the purpose and goals this book sets out to achieve and frames the context well for what it communicates. Hope this helps!
---
"I would like to take a moment to clarify what Love Has A Face is and what it is not, from an author's perspective. Love Has A Face is not a standard story-line driven linear missionary biography (no matter how it is classified). It is more along the lines of a collection of autobiographical memoirs, like a photo exhibition or art gallery where each chapter is the frame for an image to be portrayed. The images do not tell a linear story (as in a time lapse series of events) but rather probe into a thematic question. What does it mean to be live in God's love and give it away to the world around us...

I did not write this book to give anyone answers. The most valuable tools are those that lead us on a quest to find the answers for ourselves: to find THE answer in the person of Jesus. It is not written to be an apologetic on the christian faith, nor is it a treatise on appropriate missiology practice. It is simply an invitation to embrace a journey. It is meant to leave you more questions than answers...

Oswald Chambers wrote: "Faith... can be turned into personal possession only by conflict."
Faith is of no value unless becomes it our own. This book is designed to leave you with questions that should provoke an inner conflict where you lay hold of a deepening desire to truly know who Jesus is and to be known by him; to become the expression of His heart in a hurting world..." excerpts taken from the author blog of Michele Perry
