This is an excellent book for the beginning hockey fan or player to read and learn the ins and outs of the game!,
This review is from: Hockey (In the Zone) (Paperback)
No one is really quite sure who invented the game of hockey. Some people claim that "Aboriginal Peoples first played a similar game in Canada," but mainly people credit James Creighton with that honor. He set down the rules for two teams to guide a rubber puck into the opposition's net to score a goal. It used to be that a player only needed just the basic equipment and ice and the game was on. It was called "shinny." Now there is a lot of specialized equipment to keep the players safe. This book features photographs of a regular hockey player and a goalie. Little insets discuss each piece of equipment or clothing and its purpose. Did you now that in pro hockey "pucks are frozen before being used?" You'll have to read the book to find out why!If you've ever played air hockey, you probably have a basic idea of the rink set up. In this book is a detailed diagram where you can see all the positions. There are rules that need to be followed and you'll also get to see a few basic hand signals. You'll also learn about the player positions, how players make it to the big times, you'll get to read blurbs about nine superstars, you can read some hints about how to stay healthy and you can try your hand at some "Hockey Brain Teasers." Are you ready to play? This is an excellent book for the beginning hockey fan or player to read and learn the ins and outs of the game. The text is well written and easy to follow. There are numerous action photographs that give the book that extra little bit of zip. I enjoyed reading about the game and was impressed with the overall layout of the book. In the back of the book are some brain teasers, a glossary and an index. If you have a young hockey afficionado in your house, this is one book you might want to consider! |
