Slick and propulsive chase thriller, November 16, 2006
Outwardly ,the marriage of TV star Harry Krantz to the glamourous Cuban born Dr Caron Alvarez is a match made in heaven .He is a handsome ,charismatic amd much loved US TV personality and she is respected surgeon who achieved public notice due to humanitarian work among Florida hurricane victims .
However ,Krantz is not the genial and all round good guy of his public persona -he flies into fits of deep and uncontrollable rage ,abusing his wife and son both verbally and physically ,and more sinister even than these he is a killer .He preys on street people ,seeks them out and murders them
One day while attacking and raping Caron the assault is witnessed by his son from his first marriage ,Josh .Caron and Josh go on the run accusing Harry of abuse .He is a gifted media manipulator and soon has the public believing his version of events -that Caron is terminally ill and ,in a mood of deepest depression has kidnapped Josh .
What follows is essentially a chase story and a good one .Caron is aided by Jack ,a tabloid journalist with a personal grudge against Harry, while Harry hires a trained hit man to kill her and pass off the death as suicide .
Katz is good at showing the unravelling of Harry Krantz as his murderous rages grow ever more violent and his sexual drive threatens the young daughter of his PA ,and she also has some pertinent remarks about media manipulation and spin doctoring that adds weight to the narrative .The rape scene is pretty graphic and explicit -something many readers will find uncomfortable. That aside this is a slickly and crisply written chase narrative that will keep the pages turning at a good rate of knots
