5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Early Gene Watson, November 29, 2005

I have no idea who Hux is but if they continue issuing compilations such as this one, I will become a big fan of theirs. While Gene Watson continues to be an excellent performer and recording artist, for my money his best recordings and most interesting songs were recorded for Capitol in the mid 1970s. This two-fer features Gene's first album LOVE IN THE HOT AFTERNOON and his 3rd album PAPER ROSIE.

LOVE IN THE HOT AFTERNOON features the title cut (originally a Resco single, which was deemed too risque by a few radio stations plus one of my favorite Gene Watson singles "You Could Know As Much About a Stranger" and his first chart entry "Bad Water". The covers selected, particularly "This Is My Week For Mexico" (an album cut for Charley Pride) are also effective.

PAPER ROSIE isn't quite as strong but it too is worth five stars. "Paper Rosie is a story song with a feel and sound similar to another of his singles "The Old Man and His Horn", although not quite as compelling a story. Actually I love all the tracks on this CD except for his cover of "You Gave Me a Mountain, an overly melodratic song (written by Marty Robbins and a hit the writer and a bigger hit for Frankie Laine)that I've always hated. You can never really go wrong buying a Gene Watson collection, and his Capitol recordings are all 5 star endeavors

I have both of these in album form and they are both excellent Gene Watson material that are a must for all Gene Watson fans or even just fans of great traditional country music. Gene is labelled a Singer's Singer but I consider him to be THE BEST VOICE IN COUNTRY MUSIC.

5.0 out of 5 stars The albums that set up Gene's career, August 1, 2005
This review is from: Love in the Hot Afternoon & Paper Rosie 2 on 1 (Audio CD)
This twofer brings together the album that set up Gene's career in America (Love in the hot afternoon) with the album that brought him to the attention of British country fans (Paper Rosie). Actually, although his British fans were very supportive, they were also very small in number. Apart from Paper Rosie, I think only one other album actually gained a British release so his British fans had to buy most of his albums as imports.

Love in the hot afternoon (from 1975) includes several classic songs. Quite apart from the brilliant title track, these include Bad water, Where love begins and You could know as much about a stranger as well as This is my year for Mexico, a song also recorded by Crystal Gayle and Charley Pride among others.

Brilliant as that album is, I think Paper Rosie is even better. Apart from the title track, other classics include If the shoe fits wear it, Till you can make it on your own, Just at dawn, Don't look at me in that tone of voice and I'd settle for just crossing her mind. There are also outstanding covers of You gave me a mountain (a Marty Robbins song also covered by Elvis Presley), Tennessee sunshine (Porter Wagoner) and Most of all why (Dolly Parton).

If you enjoy traditional country music, you'll love this twofer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gene Watson, country music from the heart., November 4, 2006
This review is from: Love in the Hot Afternoon & Paper Rosie 2 on 1 (Audio CD)
Gene Watson is a balladeer of country and honky tonk music. Gene has always personally selected the songs he records. Lyrics are brought to life with the beautiful voice of a man who truely is, a singer of ballads. Let Gene sing from his heart to yours.
