5.0 out of 5 stars Unknown treasure in the U.S March 31, 2003
Format:Audio CD
"Love hurts" was released in 1991 and had a big impact in Europe, specially in the U.K where debuted at #1 and had that position for 5 weeks, been certified Platinum x3. The first single was "Love and understanding", which was a Top 10 hit. Whether in the U.S it only reached Gold status and the singles didn't chart and happends to be unknow in that territorie.
The production of "Love hurts" features big names as Diane Warren and Desmond Child.
I'm a big fan of Cher and I think that her best albums are: "Cher" (1987), "Heart of stone" (1989) and "Love hurts". These 3 albums had the same direction (an example of that are the albums "Believe" and "Living proof").
The lyrics in "Love hurts" are fantastic, they're strong and have lots of feelings.
Geffen released 2 versions of this album. The American that has 11 tracks and the European with 12. The "extra" track is the 1991 European #1 hit "It's in his kiss" from the movie "Mermaids". The other songs have the same version on both editions. The other difference in this production is the artwork.
I highly recommend this album if you're a Cher lover.

4.0 out of 5 stars This doesn't hurt at all February 22, 2004
Format:Audio CD
Cher had a big comeback in the late 1980's with two albums and several hit singles, including "I Found Someone" and "Turn Back Time". After incarnations as a part of a pop duo that was Sonny and Cher, a story-song singer in "Half Breed" and "Gypsys, Tramps and Thieves", and a disco singer with "Take Me Home", these albums had Cher singing her "first love"--rock and roll. My opinion is that Cher has always been strongest singing rock and roll--her voice is so strong that it belongs with loud music accompanying her. This album was the least successful in the US of the "Geffen troika", the other two albums being "Cher" and "Heart of Stone". However, I think it is the most enjoyable of the three, and each song is a success.
In the US there were two hit singles from this release, "Love and Understanding" and "Save Up All Your Tears". My favourite is the latter, even though it wasn't as successful as "Love and Understanding". Both sound like a ray of sunlight on a cold winter day. "Save Up..." is about strength in the face of broken love; "Love..." is about how the world simply needs more love and understanding. I remember the sexy video for "Love and Understanding"; understandably, my mother did not want her four-year-old watching hardly anything to do with Cher! In the UK, where this album was one of the biggest of Cher's career, "Love Hurts" and "Could've Been You" were also hits. In "Could've Been You", Cher doesn't seek to "get even" or have revenge on her former lover who left her--she simply reminds him, with a hint of compassion, that it was not her decision to leave their relationship, and that her old companion had missed the boat on a future together. To me, break-up songs that seek no revenge make the best ones, and this song fits in that category.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love May Hurt But Cher Keeps On Rockin'! September 19, 2003
Format:Audio CD
I tell ya, "Love Hurts" is a great album by Cher. First off, I ordered this NEW and the cover was different then the one shown on the website. It's just a picture of her upper body alone with maroonish hair. That aside, I really enjoy this album. "Save Up All Your Tears" was a moderate hit but still not as big as the hits from her album before this "Heart of Stone." While "Love Hurts" includes some filler tricks, the standout tracks REALLY make up for the so-so ones. Of course the Warren/Desmond Child hit is a highlight, but the title track is so beautiful and retro-ish it kind of reminds me of an Elvis song. Cher kind of reminds me of Elvis when she sings that song. Another showstopper is the incredible "I'll Never Stop Loving You" where I think she is talking about Sonny Bono. I also enjoy the other hit from the album "Love And Understanding" which is one of her most underrated songs and definately grows on you. My other favorite is "Could've Been You" which kind of has the same beat as Rickie Lee Jones's hit "Special" (I think that's the title?). "Love Hurts" was released in 1991 and during that time other newcomers were coming onto the scene, taking Cher's incarnation as "Rock Queen" out of the spotlight. Even so, "Love Hurts" still has an 80's rock/Adult Contemporary sound to it. I reccomend this album for anyone who wants good quality Rock/Pop songs and/or likes Cher in general!
