Editorial Reviews

Turner is an English folk singer-songwriter and former vocalist of legendary UK punk band Million Dead. Like an earlier folksinger with roots in the punk movement, Billy Bragg, Turner spits out songs that are at once effortless and heartfelt, filled with venom, self-doubt, and love for the everyday people he meets in the street. This album was released in the UK in 2008 to glowing reviews and year-end best of lists and is now available stateside. His infectious melodies will worm their way into the hearts and minds of America. Look for him opening for the Offspring this summer.

Frank Turner Plays Wembley

Biography

Where to begin? So I'm like all the rest, I saw an Iron Maiden poster when I was about 12 years old, and obviously thought it was cool as hell. When someone told me it was a poster for a band, well, that was me sold. My parents worried that I might be sidetracked from becoming a doctor / lawyer / whatever, and hey, they were right. So I soldiered through metal into punk rock, after a girl ... Read more in Amazon's Frank Turner Store

Frank Turner is genuinely a phenomenon. It has been ten years since, in the height of Brit Pop, any musician or group of musicians completely engrossed me. But Turner, in the last five months since I first came across him, as totally got me. Frank Turner is a songwriter of great talent - if it wasn't (probably) against his code of ethics, he could probably make a fortune writing for others. His music - as the acoustic folk artist he has become since his days with punk rock band Million Dead - is all melodies and lyrics. The melodies are weaving and exciting. They are never derivative and the fit sweetly with the lyrics. Turner's voice has an impressive range, and is full of emotion. As a lyricist, he has an amazing knack of writing exactly what you are thinking, of being honest and open, and of saying all the things you wish you'd said - to yourself, your friends, current and former lovers, and to the world.

Here, on his second album, the sound is fuller - he uses his band more than on his previous releases. There are plenty of guitars (electric and acoustic), drums and even some strings. This feels totally natural, as once again Frank treats us to songs about life as a musician and a young (although getting old) person.

For me, Frank Turner has the ability to send shivers down my spine in almost any of his songs, written about almost any subject. These vary from the spectacular Photosynthesis (I won't sit down, I won't shut up, and most of all I will not grow up) to the heart-rending Long Live The Queen. In between, my favourite is probably To Take You Home, an incredibly folky and wonderfully warm love song. Either that, or the amazing opener, I Knew Prufrock Before He Got Famous.

I purchased this CD when I found out Frank was opening for Flogging Molly. I haven't been disappointed at all. It's been in my CD player for the last two weeks, and I don't think it'll be leaving any time soon. Frank's ability to tell a story with his lyrics is unmatched in the folk rock scene. This CD is great for those that are just finishing up school, and who aren't sure about where their lives are taking them. Being in this situation myself, I feel like Photosynthesis is my new anthem. I can't wait to see if he's as good live as he is in the studio!

I recently discovered Frank Turner on NPR's Tiny Desk Concerts and have become a diehard fan in a matter of weeks. I promptly bought his newest cd, Tape Deck Heart. Then went searching for more. Frank is a true poet and his song lyrics are honest, raw and full of human truths. The song Long Live the Queen brought me to tears upon first listen. Photosynthesis has me singing along, loudly. Reasons Not to be an Idiot makes me smile. In fact, every song on this cd touches me in some way. I'm so glad to have discovered Frank Turner. You will be too.

I know very little about Frank Turner. About 2 months ago someone gave me this album and Poetry of the Deed and I have been listening to it ever since. Lyrically this is the most solid album ever. It is much better than Poetry of the Deed. While the lyrics are depressing at times, they are real and not just some catchy words thrown together to sell an album. My favorite song is Better Half which I interpret as a guy realizing he had done a bad job as a husband or boyfriend and his former signifcant other has moved onto someone better. Not the most uplifting song but it sure feels good to sing the words to this song loudly on a rainy day. The final two songs are also excellent and give an excellent transition to the cd when you repeatedly listen to it over and over. Musically this album is simple and pure. I would recommend it for fans who enjoy the alt-country feel with timeless lyrics. It is worth every penny.

Love Ire & Song can really only be described as, well, Love Ire & Song. An album that demonstrates beautifully both sides of love, from the gentle ballad A Love Worth Keeping to the rhythmic and melodic To Take You Home, which talks about that common feeling we all know as love at first sight. There's also songs of separation that wish the ex-partner well i finding someone more suitable for them (Better Half). Like all of his songs, Frank uses an incredible amount of description in his songs, so much so sometimes that you think you are listening to an amazing piece of poetry instead of a song. I would definitely recommend this album to anyone who is an already dedicated Frank Turner fan or someone who has just heard of him, and everyone in between.

In my opinion, the song "Long Live The Queen" is reason enough to buy this whole album. It's a beautiful, hopeful, depressing, inspiring song that Frank wrote for a friend of his who passed away. And although this song tugs at my heart and often brings me close to tears evoking thoughts of a friend I lost, I love it because its so well written that it CAN evoke such emotions. I've also had the pleasure of seeing Frank Turner live and insist everyone do the same. He's a great artist, on record and on stage. Pick up the album, have an experience of your own, enjoy.
