Editorial Reviews

Review

"LOVE IRRESISTIBLY has firmly established Julie James as one of today's premiere contemporary romance authors. Fresh and inventive, full of intelligent people and witty repartee, this is a great story in a fantastic series .... recommended not only to fans of the series, but fans of solid and realistic love stories." --Fresh Fiction

"James' latest in her FBI/US Attorney series takes readers along on a ride filled with heat and passion. Cade and Brooke's battle of wills keeps the tension high and the chemistry sizzling. Add to that good pacing and strong storytelling, and this is a read that will keep you turning the pages. Truly entertaining." --Romantic Times

"[T]he best book yet in her FBI/U.S. Attorney series."-The Washington Post

"I laughed. I cried. I swooned. It's got everything I've come to expect from a Julie James book: a made-for-movie meet-cute complete with sarcastic quips and laugh-out-loud moments, contemporary references (this time it's Facebook), an airtight plot, witty dialogue, secondary characters that steal the limelight whenever they're on the page, and a sweet and super sexy romance." --Kindles & Wine

"This is what I look for in a contemporary romance: great characters, a believable blend of romance, funny dialog that all comes together in a story that flows with feeling and depth to it as well. It's damn near perfect." --Dear Author

Three years ago I read my first Julie James book, Something About You, and I've been addicted to her writing style ever since. I'm never left feeling disappointed after reading one of her books because, WOW, the woman definitely know how to write a contemporary with the perfect blend of romance, sizzling sexy times, wickedly funny humor, and smart characters. Love Irresistibly has exceeded my expectations and is WAY up there as one of my all-time favorite contemporary romance I've read thus far. Julie James, I bow down to you. You officially own me.

Brooke Parker is a fierce lawyer who kicks ass and takes names. She works for Sterling Restaurants, a fast growing food and beverage company, as general counsel. Since she took the job, her business savvy mind has helped the company grow steadily. She lives and breathes her job and all the challenges that come with it.

Cade Morgan is one of Chicago's top prosecutors. He used to have dreams of playing pro football once out of college but an unfortunate injury ended his football career. Now, as the assistant U.S. Attorney, he needs Brooke Parker's help to take down a corrupt state senator. Which means he needs Brooke to plant a bug in one of her restaurants so the FBI can eavesdrop on him. To do this, Cade needs to convince Brooke to help the FBI out. Brooke eventually agrees, but only after Cade is smoothly manipulated into returning her the favor someday. And when something happens at Brooke's company, she had no problem calling in that favor.
Cade made me purr with his charming and confident personality, successful career, and uber sexy body. And he cooks! I love a man who cooks. But Cade is not perfect.

Even though I did not care for the last Julie James title, I was still looking forward to this one. Unfortunately, Love Irresistibly suffers from a few of the same issues About That Night had.

To begin with, there is very little in the way of conflicts or obstacles for the hero and heroine to overcome. The description of the book says, "A former football star and one of Chicago's top prosecutors, Assistant U.S. Attorney Cade Morgan will do anything to nail a corrupt state senator, which means he needs Brooke Parker's help. As general counsel for a restaurant company, she can get a bug to the senator's table at one of her five-star restaurants so the FBI can eavesdrop on him. All Cade has to do is convince Brooke to cooperate--and he's not afraid to use a little charm, or the power of his office, to do just that."

This isn't the storyline of the book - it's simply the way the two main characters meet. The bugging of the table and its outcome are actually over quite early in the story. From that point on, we're reading a lot about two work driven people who grant each other booty call status. Since the situation regarding the bugging of the table, and the subsequent favor Brooke calls in later are over and done with quickly and don't amount to any real meaningful part of the story, it really doesn't matter where these people work - they could have worked at Dunkin Donuts. There was very little connection in the story between the action and the type of jobs the characters have. Labeling this book part of a FBI/US Attorney series seemed rather pointless.

The rest of the story has the main characters struggling with their personal trust issues.

I don't like to give a 'thumbs down' to a favorite author. However, even though Julie James is an automatic buy for me, I have been underwhelmed by her last few books. Her latest, "Love Irresistibly" is my least favorite of her works, to date. Ms. James hooked me as a reader with her first novel "Just the Sexiest Man Alive" and anyone who enjoys madcap, humorous, touching, sexy contemporary romantic plot lines should definitely read her debut novel. I enjoyed the next few books following the first release, but I have noticed a trend toward the 'been there, done that' with the author's latest books. In her bio Ms. James identifies herself as an attorney, but perhaps she needs to step outside her comfort zone again and create characters that are not lawyers or FBI agents. Her characters are beginning to blend together to the point that when they make a cameo appearance in later books I have to really struggle to recall their particular story lines!

In "Love Irresistibly" the author introduces us to Cade and Brooke. Cade is a U.S. District Attorney and Brooke is a high-powered attorney for a Chicago restaurant. The story starts out well, but the conflict between the main characters regarding their work cross purposes is quickly resolved, and the remainder of the book just deals with their own personal issues, his of father abandonment and hers of relationship inattention. Also, I never really believed in the 'love connection' between Cade and Brooke. It seemed like they were more 'in lust' than in love. I noticed that the sex scenes dominated their relationship, and while the author handles that really well in all her books, I found that 'less would have been more' in this book. In addition, I agree with another reviewer who commented on the portrayal of Cade's half brother Zach.
