"Babyfather" video

Soldier of Love is only the sixth studio album the band Sade have released during their 25 year career, and the first since Lover's Rock in 2000. For Sade herself, as the lynchpin of the group's songwriting effort, it's a simple matter of integrity and authenticity. “I only make records when I feel I have something to say. I'm not interested in releasing music just for ... Read more in Amazon's Sade Store

Without undo overstatement Sade's first two releases Diamond Life and Promise (1984 & 1985) respectively found the band growing very fast with not only each release, but from song to song as well. It was clear Sade's career was going to be a musical journey that would evolve in different ways as the band members did. Lucky for them by the time the their first decade as a band was drawing to a close, the musical tide had shifted very much in their favor. Artists who may have felt compelled to make music that sold more than inspired earlier in the decade were taking a different approach by this particular time. Good news for Sade, who'd always swam very much against the tide from the moment they came out. It would've been all too easy to basically extend on that refined yet full quartet sound of their earlier albums, that were fairly heavily arranged. In terms of their basic musical direction and songwriting style, everything was still iron glad. But a change had definitely come. And it was a good one too.

Subtlety. That's the key to understanding this entire album. Always instrumentally spare, this goes even further in that direction. Very very minimally arranged if hardly at all. Lyrically exploring the different cycles of an adult romantic relationship from one end of the emotional spectrum to the other the title song "Love Is Stronger Than Pride" is musically very little, almost just a couple conga drums and a mildly droning keyboard line. "I Never Thought I'd See The Day" extends on that theme without the beat. There's also the penetrating Spanish folk of "Haunt Me" and the breezy, soulful midtempo "Give It Up". Outside of that? This is a very very funky album.
