This movie was set in the 60's (68 to be exact) and it had the music of one of like your typical New York romance flix think "Barefoot in the Park". Ivy (Abbey Lincoln)is a black maid to a well-to-do white family on Long Island well Ivy decides she wants to move into the city to further her education and to live amongst people like her self (black) the family just doesn't want Ivy to go they don't understand why she wants to go, they consider Ivy family... well as much as one can consider the Maid a part of your family. The family is made up of Carrol O' Conner, Beau Bridges, Nan Martin and Laurie Peters. The children soon realize that Abbey wants to leave because she wants to have a life or her own which includes a man. The son and daughter decide to "hook" Ivy up with Sidney Poitier who owns a trucks service that distributes for their Father's dept store. Sidney agrees begrudgingly to this because Beau has a way of "convincing" him (no spoilers here).

It's a cute movie Abbey Lincoln is very stylish, shy yet smart as well and Sidney Poitier was clever, smooth, hip and does wonders with his expressions LOL. There is this scene where Beau Bridges says something pretty racist and I was thinking... "Wow! did he just say that?" but Sidney's face conveyed a pause... (like he took his measure of Beau to keep to himself for later) then moved smoothly along in the conversation. As a african american watching this movie it reminded me that there are so few movies out there that potrays black love in such a positive way and I know this was a old flix but it still was a surprising pleasurable find. I didn't know what to expect but it will go on my classic favorite list of movies for sure. I highly recommend it.

When I first saw Coming To America, I was so happy to finally see an African American romance. I was thinking 'Wow!! Wish we had more of those'... until I stumbled upon For the Love of Ivy. What an excellent love story. I wonder what other beautiful African American romances are out there yet to be re-discovered?

ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL. A REAL "CHICK FLICK", OR, FOR ANYONE WHO DOESN'T MIND A GOOD LOVE STORY! I LOVE SYDNEY POITIER AND ABBEY LINCOLN IN THIS FILM. HOWEVER, A MUCH YOUNGER BEAU BRIDGES REMINDS YOU OF WHAT A GREAT ACTOR HE IS, AND CARROLL O'CONNOR -- ALTHOUGH ONLY SEEN IN JUST A FEW SCENES -- FULLY COMMANDS HIS ROLE AS THE FATHER.

WHAT ELSE CAN YOU SAY ABOUT A SIDNEY POITIER MOVIE, BUT HOW WONDERFUL IT IS TO SEE AGAIN AND AGAIN. THIS ONE RANKS UP THERE WITH "IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT", AND "LILLIES OF THER FIELD". SO I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT FOR OTHERS TO ENJOY.

I haven't seen For Love of Ivy since 1968, but in my mind's eye I can still visualize whole scenes. Now THAT's a great movie.

I started collecting Sidney Poitier's movies about 10 years ago. That's how I first heard the name, Abbey Lincoln. I know her now as a jazz stylist and actress. I've watched "For Love of Ivy" again and again. Each time, I watch it as if I'm seeing it for the very first time. Sidney was really a bad mamma jamma in this movie. He knew when to speak up and out and he knew when to turn his brow up and offer the "look." Love that look Sidney - it speaks volumes! The pair - Ivy and Jack - have good chemistry even though they were from 2 different worlds. By the end of the movie, I was convinced that he genuinely cared for her. Jack was Ivy's knight-in-shining-armor and I know that if there were a sequel, Ivy would have been a success as a professional. I was on pins and needles - rooting for her to get herself into the city - just as she had planned. For a time, she seemed to weaken under the pressure. The movie is so-o-o-o-o funny to me. Sidney Poitier comes across so seriously in real life that it was refreshing to see him "unveiled." Uptown Saturday Night and Let's Do It Again are "must-sees," as well. He and Bill Cosby are hilarious!!! Check out Abbey Lincoln in "Nothing But a Man." Filmmakers don't make movies like these anymore.

Sidney Poitier is absolutely wonderful in this movie. I especially loved the end because he turns over a new leaf! This shows he didn't really like his night job at all, and that a good woman can help a good man see his true potential for better things. I really enjoyed watching it.

This was fun to see this black couple fall in love. Ivy wants to leave her white employers house and move into the city and take typing class. They don't want her to go. So the kids hire Sidney Poitier character to take her out. A guy who is a hustler. Its really good. And its black love. I love it. No matter the color its fun.

I First Saw This Movie 5yrs. Ago, I Had Rented It And I Loved The Movie So Much, I Had To Have My Own, I Had Always Heard Of Amazon, But Was Reluctant To Use Them. So I Gave Them A Try And This Movie Was One Of My Many Purchasesn I Rate This Movie 5 Stars Because I'm A Sidney Poitier Fan!

This movie portrayed a successful, professional black business man in the 60's - -how refreshing. Sidney Poitier was not surprisingly, impressive, powerful and sexy!

Terrific movie, good acting by all.
