Book Description

Wendy and her mother move to Key West, Florida, to enroll Wendy's three-year-old brother, who has Down's syndrome and cannot talk, in a dolphin therapy program.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8-- Wendy, 12, has seen her parents at odds with each other ever since the birth of their Down's syndrome child, Jeremy, now 3. Her mother, Rita, firmly believes that he can be cured, while Charlie cannot face having fathered a less than perfect child. Rita has heard of a program involving exceptional children and dolphins, and takes Jeremy and Wendy to Key West for five months. Wendy, at first appalled to be starting seventh grade far from friends, soon adjusts. Jeremy relates instantly to the dolphins. Obviously, he is not drastically affected by Down's; he is a beautiful child, and no mention is made of the less appealing side of the syndrome: drooling, messy feedings, lack of bowel control, etc. The dolphins are the real stars of the book. Jeremy benefits from their acceptance, and from the warmth and concentrated attention of the staff at Grassy Key, to the point where he produces a clear, happy "Daddy!" for Charlie when his father comes to visit. A tad facile in its happy ending, and in Wendy's easy adjustment, this is a pleasant read for dolphin lovers. Those familiar with Seligson's nonfiction title, The Dolphins at Grassy Key (Macmillan, 1989), will eat this up. By the way--the meadowlark described early on is some other bird. --Patricia Manning, Eastchester Public Library, NY
