Wonderful Story Filled With Lots of Secrets and Surprises,
By BJG391@aol.com (Chicago,IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Love Just in Time (Timeswept) (Mass Market Paperback)
Clarissa Cummings is a physician's assistant who has just lost her job. Despite all her efforts, her husband has become quarrelsome and distant during their few years of marriage and this latest bit of information isn't going to go over well. Her stress is magnified upon her early arrival home, only to find her husband in bed with her friend. Overcome with grief, she drives away and has an accident on the bridge over the Chesapeake-Delaware Canal. She finds herself being saved from drowning by a handsome Jack Martin in the year 1829. Jack, of noble English family, has fled to America after a scandal and found contentment in the simple farm life. He longs to make Clarissa his bride, but secrets of his past and her distrust in men appears to make the goal unattainable. I enjoy a good time-travel romance, and this one was particularily good. Clarissa is on outspoken woman of the 90's and has a difficult time adjusting to the demure expectations for women of the 19th century. Jack appears to be a true man of honor and his word, something desperately lacking in the 20th century. Clarissa soon finds herself more relaxed and content with the simplicities of farm life, although she is quite an impetuous snoop when digging for the truth. I enjoyed all the characters in this story who add realism and depth to the era. I could hardly wait to get to end of the book to find what secret Jack was trying desperately to keep/protect Clarissa from, plus Clarissa has a surprising secret of her own to hide. Excellent. Perfect snowy weekend or beach read.

Bad Time Travel,
This review is from: Love Just in Time (Timeswept) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is my first review on Amazon and I am only writing it because I hated this book. The romance was forced, and the characters very flat, especially Jack who only seems to care about his farm and Clary. What really bugged me about this book is what kept the lovers "apart" was nonexistant. Basically Jack has a secret he can't reveal to Clary but for some reason he thinks keeping this one secret means he can't tell her anything about his past, like where he was born, his family, even his name. It is utterly rediculous that he couldn't tell her SOMETHING about himself instead of just asking her to unconditionally trust him.
Clary's character was more even but still often acted silly, and seemed to take to living on a 19th century farm doing manual labor like a duck to water . . . not very realistic. There are a few bits of cringingly bad dialogue and the whole premise of the time travel was a none issue, they both just accepted she was from the furture and that was an end to it. It seems like the author just wanted to be able to have an angry woman whose husband cheats on her and then magically make the husband disappear to bring in the new guy. This gets 2 stars because I liked most of the secondary characters, especially Sarah, Sam and Rose. But watch out for this one, it is just plain silly.

A pleasant read, but certainly nothing special,
By Michelle888 (Australia) - See all my reviews

Just when she thought that things couldn't get any worse, with her husband out of work, mortgage to pay and current marital problems, Clarissa finds out that she is being retrenched. So when she goes home to find her husband in bed with their friend, she is absolutely stunned. Shocked and humiliated, she drives off in the rain and when she loses control of the break, she drives over the cliff, down into the canal. When she wakes up, she finds herself face to face with a handsome stranger... but in another century.
Jack Martin is a man with secrets. Forced to flee England after a scandal, he has built himself a new life far away from his aristocratic upbringing. When he rescues Clarissa, he knows in his heart that she is the woman for him. But how does he convince the woman who was betrayed by her husband that his intentions are honorable, and that he would never hurt her? After reading A TIME TO LOVE AGAIN, which is one of the best historical romance books I've had the pleasure of reading, I have been searching for other books by the same author. Now this book, LOVE JUST IN TIME, seemed to hold the same promise of another exciting, romantic and heartwrenching read as soon as I started it. But I was rather disappointed. As a time travel story, I was expecting to feel the same worry that the heroine would be thrust back into her own time and therefore add to the problem, which the couple must face. Yet from the time Clarissa was sent to early nineteenth century America by some freak accident, I didn't get that feeling at all. What was the phenomenon that sent her back in time? Not once was it explained to us. Anyway, my complaints aside, this was quite an entertaining read with likeable characters that make you wish for all their happiness. Clarissa was nicely portrayed as a woman from 20th century having to adjust to the "primitiveness" of the 19th century. Jack is a great hero, honorable, kind and I truly felt his love for Clarissa. And the surprise twist in the ending was certainly worth waiting for. Overall, LOVE JUST IN TIME was quite a pleasant read, but if you want to read a really great book from Flora Speer, I recommend reading A TIME TO LOVE AGAIN.
