Book Description

April 30, 1997
As Oscar Wilde lamented, frequently we kill the things we love. The killing may be literal, as in murder, or it may be more figurative, bringing about spiritual death, as when love goes bad. Love Kills gathers together more than two dozen first-rate tales that demonstrate in chilling ways what Charles Bukowski once observed: No one is more dangerous than a jilted lover. Here you'll find characters of every kind - even a few children - struggling with their darkest feelings. In this volume, such giants in the suspense field as Marcia Muller, Lawrence Block, Ruth Rendell, Donald Westlake, Evan Hunter, Nancy Picard, Bill Pronzini, John Lutz and Joe Gores weave tales that will linger for years. In addition, the editors have unearthed three stories from the fifties that deserve classic status, including "The Quiet Room" by Jonathan Craig, which was made into the Showtime film - Dark Angels. Love Kills is a lively, thoroughly entertaining anthology from two acclaimed crime editors. It is a page-turning collection of "sinisterly" - told love stories for all readers of mystery fiction.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

The title explains the unifying theme here: these short stories illustrate some ways in which love can kill. Authors include Pickard, Pronzini, Muller, Scoppettone, Rendell, Westlake, and many others. A nice addition to the anthology shelf.

From Booklist

Genre vets Gorman and Greenberg have culled 31 outstanding stories about love and death for this intriguing anthology. The collection runs the gamut from creepy horror and suspense-filled tales of the macabre to the humorous and offbeat to hard-boiled detective fiction. At the heart of each is a love-related theme, albeit love gone off the tracks, turned into hate, or run amok. Some of the best stories--and it's difficult to single any out because all of them are uniformly good--are Bill Pronzini's spooky "Night Freight," about a railroad tramp who stops at a lonely farmhouse; Barbara Collins' "Obeah, My Love," a tale of Caribbean voodoo; Ruth Rendell's "New Girlfriend," a story about a married woman who's terrified of men; and Bill Crider's "My Heart Cries for You," a tragicomedy about an unorthodox marriage. This is a superb, wonderfully diverse anthology, representing some of the best the mystery genre has to offer. It belongs in every mystery collection.
